I had posted this comment in a previous topic, and though in light of recent events it might not be worth posting here as a topic for consideration.

Concerning ranking points and pictures, I suggest a sliding scale that works toward a limit. Say limit of 10 per story, first 10 points, second 9, third 8..... something along that lines.
Even better would be Limit 5 pictures per person per story, 5 points to start and one less each additional picture.
Same for video with a smaller limit say 3 per story

Recent events have shown a new member to have 10,172 points in the last 7 days, 4,123 points in the last 24 hours, and a 768 ranking jump to #30 in the last 30 days. (8/30/8)
No offense to this member, and active involvement should be encouraged, yet should a member be able to leap so high so quick in the ratings within a couple days, and for the most part through the posting of pictures ?

food for thought..........

Bottom line--the points are skewed against writers. Original material is not highly valued here--if, that is, you use the points assignments as a measuring scale!
The way to build up points: just endlessly add photos and videos to build up NP's "for sale" inventory. We've talked about that before, and now it's been flawlessly proven by one new member.

For me points only matter in that when reading comments or stories, it gives at least some perspective as to the writers involvement in the community.
I can not seem to express right now why "that" seems to matter, but for some reason it does.
I think every user has their own reasons for being a part of this community. Even being vocal with my perceived flaws, I feel there are far more good aspects about NowPublic, than the bad.

That new member you are discussing here has actually had his account suspended through failure to comply with our guidelines and for adding hundreds of photos with no text attached. We don't encourage that behaviour either.
I agree that original material needs to rank much higher than highlighted material and when our new story creation process is rolled out - that will factor in.

Thanks, Amy.
Is there any way to have a coordinated Hurricanes channel for times like this when many members are contributing hurricane and TS material? If it were named Hurricanes, or Hurricanes 2008, or Tropical Storms 2008, then all succeeding storms could go into the channel, with a shared tag, like the Olympics.
Then readers could find all the stories much faster.

We have one already - it's here.
The tag is 'hurricane'.

Thanks, Amy! :) Is there a way that we could have a continously-updated list of current channels and tags posted in their own topic thread in the Forums?

I'm not sure I'll have time today, but I'm sure it's something we can put together next week.

Actually I did have time - the list of the channels and their subnavs are here!
