NowPublic Channel Guide
NowPublic has a fresh set of content channels to make it easier for you to read and share stories, and make your way around the site.
We've streamlined the channels we had and added a couple of new ones.
All your previous contributions are still here, and they remain under their original categories - you don't have to change a thing. On our end, we've future-proofed your work by adding the appropriate new category tag. The old categories have not vanished, but they are no longer all our top-level channels.
We'll be making more changes to the way the channels look in the coming months. We'd like to hear what you think, so please post any questions or comments below.
Here's a breakdown of the new channels:
Get the latest local news, wherever you live. This is the place to read and share the stories that matter in your neighborhood, and those that are happening in your region or country. Stories tagged with the name of your town, region or country will automatically go into this channel.
Read, share, and participate in the latest news stories affecting our world. Learn about political events and issues, conflicts, emergencies and weather stories as they unfold. If you're looking for stories from the Politics, Crime, Emergencies, Weather and People channels, this is the place to find them.
From movies, music and media, to graphic design, gaming and art, read and contribute news from the worlds of culture, arts and entertainment. This is where you'll find stories from the Entertainment channel.
"Green" your world with the latest news and developments in eco-friendly and sustainable living, environmental science and technologies, community successes, and the impact of global climate change.
From deals and acquisitions, to market trends and industry innovations, this channel is dedicated to it all: company news, products, computing, consumer electronics, personal finance, currencies, and markets. This is the place to find stories from the Technology and Money & Stuff channels.
Keep your life in balance: this is the place to read and share stories about fitness, wellbeing, health care, nutrition, family and relationships.
From forward fashion and gourmet goods, to world travel and shopping hotspots, this is the place to post news about stylish living, leisure, and your favorite things. This is the place to find stories from the Travel channel.
Get the latest local and international news, scores, and highlights for your favorite sports and teams, find out about upcoming games and events, and discuss the world of sport with a global network of fans.
Catch up on the world of the weird, random and hard to imagine, by sharing stories that defy convention and categorization. This is the place for news of the most eclectic and unusual kind.

I think the new categories are excellent - but what happened to "Opinion"? Most of my articles fit into this category, since I write many op-ed pieces - yes I talk a lot ;) In fact, I've written another story that I'm waiting to upload, which can definitely only go into an opinion category.
So what happens to these articles?
I strongly believe that there is still a need for this category, not just for myself, but for great op-ed contributors such as: Barry Artiste; Merlin; Karen Hatter; VoiceForPeace; SimplyTrue and Joellerose. I'm sure there are still many more that I haven't managed to get to yet.

Good question! Opinion articles are still doable, but Opinion, in and of itself, was kind of a vague category: this way, opinion articles will be more closely associated with their root topics (mostly political, funny enough, but also Culture and Health); indeed, opinions are always opinions about something.
My personal pet peeve was Press Release, which was too-often abused. Hardly any users of that channel got the difference between an ad and a press release, i.e. "this is what I'm selling" vs. "this is what I'm doing". I"m glad it's gone.

Hello Jordan,
Thanks for your reply. It's so odd that occasionally I'll have a question answered the same day in the forums - when there are other questions that here sit for weeks without any recognition whatsoever. They're still there too!
At any rate, thank you for clarifying that for me Jordan.
I just thought of another one that's gone missing, which I really used to enjoy - Science - I really can't believe that one has gone! It used to cover space, science findings, science experiments and many other relevant types of great articles.
Where do these go now? Hasn't this put ScienceDave out in the cold? Dang! I miss it already. :)

I think Tech & Biz is the answer to Science. It is a mix of both.
at 17:13 on February 7th, 2008
Also Environment and Health, depending on the matter at hand. And, just for the record, there wasn't a Science category to start with.

Jordan, change is always good -- the redesign of NowPublic is fantastic! Perhaps however at some point in time education/schools can be added as a content channel.

ScienceDave can definitely keep his name! Otherwise we'd have to call him "The Artist Formerly Known as ScienceDave".
(If we called him "StrangeDave", he'd probably get mad)

Oh G-d Jordan!
You have no idea how that entire comment still has me laughing! So much so, that I turned around and asked my husband (who was on his computer!) to come see. ;)

So what happens to all the old stories under all the old channel/topics? How will we find them now? when we want to refer to them? Many old stories are still relevant, just because they are older doesn't make them out-dated.

The Channels are really just mandatory tags... the old topics still exist, but just not as top-level channels.

The old categories are merged into the new ones with the stories, so a Technology story You saw before can now be found in Tech & Biz.

Even when I posted one piece in opinion, once upon a time, I was officially told once "needs work" because it was opinion*. Duh!
Without the tag, it would seem those who write opinion pieces will be open to more such sniping.
One of the biggest problem in U.S. media today is the lack of separation between opinion and news.
I believe a fix is needed.
*I was going to give a link to that instance. However, it apparently is not "popular stuff", "most popuar" or "just in" and I cannot find it anymore. Sigh. I guess that's another topic.

I miss my Politics TLC.
Something is wrong since the changes wewere made. I and others are getting errors when going to NP and going to a story. When I read email in the site I get error messages. I get thrown off and an error message comes up. I try to refresh and nothing. Whe I write in the comments The oages keeps scrolling up. I got an email last night from BMCnews (I think) on my blog because htye were having trouble writing a comment. This is probably someting to look at. If it is frustrating me what about new users.
I had trouble many times last night tring to update my story. It would take 10 minutes to get back into edit mode after my browser gives error message. Other sites and pages, No Problems

Wow! I visited your websites--awesome stuff.

Yep, I agree. And alas, too many people mistake ranting for news.

You're experiencing a bug that's unrelated to the Channel switch... we're workin' on it!
at 20:51 on February 25th, 2008
also, why are the chanels in highlight different to the site channels? I even updated highlight tool but no fix!

This is driving me nuts! Along with the bug that causes everything I post to be published as "Strange." I have to go back and edit it again. Between cleaning up the bizaare tags, and also making sure it gets slotted right, it now takes about 3 tries to get something posted correctly. Developers...helpppppp!

I am still having trouble with the jumping up in stories I am reading. I am still having trouble posting comments as it jumps to the top of the page like a refresh routine in meta tags.

I am having the same problem, it really is annoying when you are trying to read a long article or comments. It also makes it hard to edit posts.

I notified the technical team yesterday. They are at a conference in Boston so the turn around time with this bug will not be as fast as usual but they are aware of it.
