Examiner advertising without asking for our opinion

I noticed advertising on my page. I don't know how long eEaminer.com has put in their advert, but I find just noticed it today. I find it annoying that they added it onto my page without asking me, nor offering payment.

I don't know about you, but I signed up to write for NowPublic....

Is this the way it is going to be?....

Amy....I don't see any censorship going on here or anyone being told to 'shut up' - pretty sure that's against our code of conduct... ;)

So far so good, I have to agree.

Just sometimes, some of us feel that we are not heard.... that we don't matter. Not through words, but actions. Like we don't have any say with the decision making.

And if we don't have any control over our environment, it is just a step away from feeling used.

Amy,

Actually censorship is practiced by Nowpublic and more specifically yourself. An excellent example is your PULLING of my story Hugo Chavez and the Cowardly World.

In the forum Freedom of Press Nowpublic Style I adressed the censorship issue and you quoted the Terms of Service and stated the following:

As stated in our Terms of Service:

  • Changes to the Site

NowPublic reserves the right to change any aspect of the Site or the Services including the right to refuse or remove any content, whatever the source, at any time without any notice or liability to You.

    1. So yes, even though this practice is not enacted on a regular basis, we sometimes do follow these guidelines.

Perhalps the new ownership will be able to review the Terms of Service Agreement and how it is used by the editing staff.

In the case of my story your actions did amount to censorship.

      REV J

I do not advocate hunting. :)

I looked up the definition, and hunting doesn't necessarily involve a gun.

Things like" house hunting" or "hunting" for the truth, don't require violence.

      My apologies, Rev.

It's OK Sara....nothing personal.......The fact is NP gains something from the writers whom contribute and now they are making a profit from it.. I have a problem with that..My problem is with the guy who bought NP. There are other things that are troubling.

1.In 2001 the executive he hired to manage his QWest Corporation was indicted for insider trading with Condoleezza Rice..siting lucrative blackbox Telecommuncations Contracts with the government. Now we know this was before the Iraq And Afghanistan War....So what were they planning? And given the information it is telling prior to 911 happening indicates that Condi knew that 911 was an inside job......this puts Anschutz in the middle of this.

      2. He has a huge Entertainment Business. I wonder his mental collusion in thinking News is Entertainment... He may think so..But I don't.....and it is a telling attempt to blurr the two professions by this guy....probably intentional because Entertainment makes violence seem not real, oh that could never happen....or so what kind of attitude...because we are conditioned so much with violence on TV as not real....so we make no protests about it....So if they mix up our feelings and perceptions with this and in the real world under the tag of News/Entertainment has Anschutz's Empire is....we do not become traumatized by real wars....and the killing and torture of people.... We think well it's like Entertainment.. I have a big problem with this and the brainwashing they committ everyday in our subliminal surroundings.. They are evil people.

      3. He has was the last person to be booking Michael Jackson, and the guy who refused to refund tickets when the Pop Star suddenly died. Why is that? He was also moving forward with a deal in selling Neverland to him Michael Jackson's home. Why would MJ sell his Neverland? He was not that hard up for money...And then his death? I think he was silenced, maybe he knew stuff about Anschuz that he did not want known, so had him tranquilized and murdered.. I would not put it past these people.

      4. He owes the IRS a whopping 143.6 million in back taxes. How is it a Billionare does not pay his taxes? Something really corrupt about this guy.

      5. Never did like his ploy to snag David Bechum for his New Galaxy in LA. David was lured just like Michael Jackson because of their talented ability and they wanted to use them for their profits and gain.. Just like they are using Nowpublic. David is from the UK and he should play with his team..instead of tempting him with big money...which is ultimately connected to the Secret Inside US Government CIA crooks.

I do believe that NP has a legal avenue to get out of the deal....and that is NP can not make Big Media Bucks from Anschutz because it violates the trust to the writers. It violates the reason NP came into existence and that was an alternative News source..for citizen journalism. They are using the labor of writers to profit from.....It is Internet Fraud...and a Scam. Contributing so they make money, and making you feel good you can write is against the law and an example of ghost slavery, trickery, snake oil charm tactics.

My adivice is to form a Writers and Photography Union.. Not the same as UAW...because we won't ask for dues and Union fees. Only the vote and confidence that writers works are not being used to profit from without compensation....and that does not mean staff makes more and the writers make less. If you don't join the Union you are declared as a Big Media supporter...and you can not post articles or photographs in this Citizen Journalist Site.

Mike, I think you started out as a good guy, but the money just got you "high", and it is looking like you did sell us out....Rev J you don't have to hunt him down because his conscience will,

      Hi All,

The Examiner ads seem to have given way to even more irritating google ads on the top of the front page!

Not sure if this is progress or what. But then perhaps this is how: "Money Talks".

      Good luck to the management.

It does look like it is only about the money, since they didn't even have the decency to notify us of the changes...

They told us NowPublic was going to continue as usual, but it looks like they weren't honest about that. They said they were going to send us a letter explaining some things, but all it said was how to make money writing for examiner.

I just find it hard to trust the management when they aren't being open with us.

And I find it hard to write something of quality with the ads like "Sugar Daddy" and "flirt with Canadian women" on top of the page. It is becoming more trashy.

I think it is only going to get worse. It just doesn't make sense.

Actually, I find the google ads better (liked your comment today), and the right side ads not so "in your face."  Did they decrease the size, or just change the background to white?  Makes a big difference.  And the popups are gone.  Thank you.

Preferences and politics aside, I suggest you get AdBlockPlus if you use Firefox, sara. I've not seen an ad for years - it the single most important Firefox addon for me.

I downloaded this but it doesn't work for me.

Opinion?  If writers here are not offered a piece of the action, this site will become abandoned property.  And all the right-wing issue ads are offensive and off-putting to many readers who are NOT teabaggers.

If Examiner bought NP so that it could kill off an outlet that allows free expression -- so that it can control content and eliminate outlets that attract lefties or free thinkers -- it is succeeding.  Someone suggested to me that it's a CIA front.  Anschultz is extreme right, so  maybe that's what this is about?

Now that I see ads all around my work, it's got me to thinking... SHOW ME THE MONEY!

Um, not sure how to help you out there, sara. I think there should be good help pages on the addons area for the blocker though. I'm not at all technical about it...

Well, it seems that the pitches to "be an Examiner" are designed to siphon away contributors to NP with the lure of moeny -- which has yet to be offered to NP contributors (although I note Tippett's allusion to same in this forum). Again I say: "Show me the money!"

Personally, I would not write a single word for the rightwing Examiner, regardless of how much they offered, and I question their "stewardship" of NP. Was Anshultz used as a front to kill off the free expression that's a hallmark of NP? Maybe he is a CIA front, as someone suggested to me? The CIA does have a history of buying up media properties (or editors of media properties) as a control mechanism.

Some of us may have to take steps to cover our bases, and now... that is, if we're not shipped off to a FEMA camp...

I am very disappointed at what is happening here at NP...

He is involved with the coverup of 911. His CEO of Qwest Communications was caught doing insider trading scam with Condolezza Rice....promising him black box Government Contracts.

I understand that advertising helps finance things and I don't have much objection to the inclusion of ads, but it is very disappointing to see ads that are unsuitable to be paired with news articles.  For instance, the ad depicting a semi naked woman Lose Belly Fat should never appear in conjunction with a serious discussion about anorexia and bulemia.  This morning I looked at my posting about the work being done to save little girls from early marriage and the ads on the right hand side are for marriage brokers and 'willing' young women from what looks like third world countries - sleazy ads at the best of times, certainly not suitable for pairing with human rights issues.

I already write for the examiner and have already been moved from a local edition to a featured spot in the national edition. PLUS the exposure alone got me invited to write the opening article for a new magazine coming out jan 2010.

And so? You like the idea you are helping the guys who caused this mess? And just what is your responsibility to the NP forum? You never had one.. In my book it proves the hypocrisy.... If the Right truely is bipartisan, they would pay also for articles from the Left...But they don't pay a dime to NP writers. Why? They bought it for what purpose? Only to lure those away from NP by giving money. At the Examiner you have to write what they want you to write.  You are only a deception, a person easily bribed and bought.

Yes, I'm picking up a conflict of interest (not to mention a laughable irony) here too. I don't see the ads because I have adblocker, but the sorts of anti-women sentiment inherent in the ads you describe certainly displease me a great deal. I would expect to see them on the site for Heat Magazine but not on NowPublic.
