You can import photos from Flickr and Video from Youtube using our crowd sourcing tool. This lets you bring your own Flickr and Youtube material into NowPublic and also collaborate with others who have footage.
In order to use your own photos you'll need to go into your settings page and provide your Flickr log in info. This will be used to give you (and only you) access to your flickr account. To change your settings do the following:
Click on 'edit my settings' in the top nav.
Click on the 'settings' tab.
At the bottom of the Settings page you'll see a place where you can add your Flickr Account Settings. Fill this in.
The next time you use the crowd sourcing tool you'll see flickr material for you to use. You can search for your material on Flickr and add it to your story.
Another question: How do you get the little gray box with the article snippet and source in it? I used the highlighter (only once, though) and it only included a link to the original story.
Agreed that it is useful to flag something "Good Stuff", but there are also some stories that could be tagged "Bad Stuff", "Spam" and so on. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this. Likewise, there is a way to flag favorite authors, but no way to block people who are spamming, flaming, trolling, etc. These are basic tools that most any social site makes available; it seems to me that without them, you're going to offer a degraded user experience.
Why (he asked more or less gently) does the thumbnailer for stories make such bad choices? I mean, why not resize for the max dimension to fit the available space? Or (better yet) let the user size the thumbnail box over the image? I have already seen images where the thumbnailer manages to make the thumbnailed image entirely irrelevant to the story; that seems counterproductive, no?
Also there are some bugs. For instance, my last comment, I was asked, "What is 9+9:?" and I dutifully entered "18" into the box and tapped the button. It told me my answer was wrong. Not in base 10, it isn't. Someone should maybe look into that...
Firtly - welcome to NowPublic. You've quickly jumped into the NowPublic world...it usually takes most users weeks to find their way to the forums.
We do in fact have a flagging system which has all the tools you've described, however access to the flags is limited to Editors and Guest Editors. See here for a description of the various flags that are employed. We limit the access to flags simply becuase the risk of abuse is significant...I could only imagine what would happen if everyone had access to the spam flag!
The answer to your thumbnail question, if I understand it correctly, is that the selection of the specific photo which appears next to the story is automatic. In most case, the user does not select it. In terms of sizing of the thumbnail, the flash player which we use to protect the content sizes the thumbnails. And yes, sometimes automation is counterproductive...but in the main it works.
You are correct about the bug with the math question. We are aware of it and working on it.
At least seven subway stations in Washington D.C. are reported by on-scene bystanders as being on fire...the official report from Washington official is there is an "accident"....
The President of Taiwan is in Nicaragua right now trying to garner support from the Nicaraguan President for separating from the mainland...
Does anybody know any more about these stories, or how do I add posts to the forum??? Thank you.

Hi! I'm using the NP widget on Facebook - I'm trying to refresh it .. but it doesn't want to change on my profile page? Any ideas on this? Is this a Facebook issue?
I'm also having issues uploading pictures from my phone to NP. I'm
with ATT&T (which was Cingular) and my phone's e-mail address ends
with "@txt.att.net". But I noticed this wasn't the one listed under
the mobile upload page. Do I need to make it match what's on the page
or is there something else I'm missing? Thanks.
I just finished writing an entire 3 page story together with info., from all over the web (in Highlight) when my browser crashed. While it's easy to "restore session" for my browser, my story has disappeared and I'm crushed. 2.5 hours work of research and creating the story for nothing.
This is the second time it's happened. I didn't bother saying anything the first time, since I thought it might have been just a glitch, somehow I felt sure that a browser crash would be one of the things that the software engineer who designed the plug-in would have anticipated.
I know it's happened to others also. Could the "powers that be" please let the right person know about this bug? Thanks in advance, ~ Swan
Thankfully, I got in the habit of opening up WordPad every time I write something other than a comment. With a few hot key clicks, documents are manually saved every 30 minutes to a memory stick
My computer could blow up and I'd still have my work.
I can tell you right away that this is a very common problem and, unfortunately, there's no real solution. Some software packages support the concept of a draft copy. They have a Save button that posts to a draft folder so that you can recover your work in the event of a crash. Perhaps NowPublic can work on adding such a feature. Until then, though, the browser remains a problem.
Here's a useful work-around, though:
Edit your text in a word processor. It doesn't matter which one you use - wordpad or notepad or MS Word or OpenOffice Writer - anything will do. Save your work to your own hard disk in case you have a problem with your computer. When ready you can copy from the word processor back to the highlight page.
Is there a way to custom edit the NP photo widget to limit it to one photo for my blog. It was only showing one, but since you changed formats I now have four to seven, and mixed with headlines. I will take it off if this cannot be fixed. It makes loading blog very slow.

Hey Christophr -
Have you looked through the Tools section on Highlight? There is a full users guide there. If you have any questions, just post them here or email me.

Hi Raj,
There is a known bug with the Facebook application. Our technical team is working on fixing it.
at 22:23 on October 31st, 2007
Nevermind. I figured it out. sent myself an email photo and copied the address from that. It worked.
Now let's see if I can send a photo from my phone.
Can't get my mobile phone email address to register. I've sent photos from my camera phone and they don't show up. Sent to news@nowpublic.com
Now looked at new settings, and it says to use:
1+[yournumber]@ mobile.mycingular.com , tried 19712399894@ mobile.mycingular.com
and 1+9712399894@ mobile.mycingular.com and 1-971-239-9894@ mobile.mycingular.com
and all are wrong. got this great picture today of a train full of 'hummers' etc, back from Iraq?
The digital camera I'm using is giving me a problem. so can only send it from the phone.
What am I doing wrong.
