What's the point when all the old problems still exist? Color scheme, yeck! Can't get anything to work right, can't upload photos, can't get the never-ending sin to stop sinning. never know if your article posted unless you can open another window or tab, and failing that since even NP won't load, try it in another browser. And even the toolbar won't work, can't make bold, or italic, haven't dared the link yet. can't delete unnecessary words in an article trying to publish. and publish?
A New Look? isn't going to help the usability of the site. a squid after a submarine, what's that all about? some secret insider thing? and the images is the header? Are you trying to indicate that NowPublic is just a joke? that's the message I get from that.
Why can't you list how many members, countries and cities in the header anymore? That's a lot more pertinent.
We reset the style on the upload section of the story page, so all the upload slots are visible, and the license-management menu is once again clickable.
As I said above, I really like the new NP, and I much prefer it to the old look.
I have one suggestion though - could the replies to comments be more obvious (indented etc?). At the moment, I can't see what are first replies to stories and what are replies to replies.
Todd, I don't post from NP to my blog, unless I forget to uncheck that box. If I do, I then have to go clean the mess up. The mess also includes all kinds of crazy tags, as we all know the "tagging system" is totally off-the-wall.
It's of more value, I think, to highlight from your blog to NP if you're sharing. Then you can control what goes on your blog and not have to do clean-up chores. That's just my opinion, though.
Thanks for all your comments... we've addressed the bug with deleting messages, we will be rolling out a fix for that.
The cosmetic changes were done in tandem with many back end changes that put us in a position to move forward with an infrastructure project that will improve reliability.
When we click on a comment in that box, it would be nice to be taken to that comment in a discussion thread, instead of the absolute start of the discussion. And, once we've posted a comment, it would be nice to be taken back to where we were, instead of having to schlep all the way back through the thread from the start. :)
Hey, my birthday's coming up, do that fix to help celebrate!
Is anyone aware that the crowdsourcing tool for photos no longer works? It will sling any terms from the story into the search box, so you first get a search for, say : murder+sad+detroit+police+searched+house+neighborhood+dog+didn't+bark (this is not an actual example, as you can't copy and paste from that search box, but darned close)
Clear that out, and type in your actual search tag. I use tags that I originally put on photos I uploaded. I use tags on those photos to be able to find and use them later.
The only thing you'll get back from a search with a logical tag is the spinning wheel and then--the crowdsourcing box just...disappears. Lather, rinse, repeat, nothing changes.
The letter "G" is the only thing that's active on the pink "Go" button on the front page search box. If your cursor arrow hits on the "o" or anywhere except the precise left and the "G", the button--and hence, the search function-- won't work.
All the above being said, I am getting a chuckle out of some of the graphics. The one of a cellphone being used to record a spaceship "uploading" a little human is very clever.
Lots of things are starting to function correctly....BUT the lightbox for the slideshows pops up in the lower right hand corner, actually partially below it. Full view is obstructed, and there is no way to close the lightbox, except by refreshing the window. Good job, tech guys. I Persona'd my Firefox with California Sunset and now my browser matches the site.
Since you're busy tweaking, I'm going to pitch this again. Could we have a "crime" section? Sometimes it's hard to pick out a category for a crime story. This would also help accommodate NP members posting their personal crime stories.
And I'd dearly love to have a dedicated travel section. That's another topic that can be slotted into "style," but given its own section, maybe we'd get some really really good stuff and photos. I'd love to write about OK and some other places, but there's really no place right now that it would fit in.
Ianivs, the program code might not have changed but the formatting of the quote-box/blockquote has indeed changed. The old format wasn't great but it was more semantically correct with less cruft. Now there are multiple DIV tags and the attribution text is placed outside the blockquote. This is not the way it was previously. The programming hasn't changed but the HTML certainly has, presumably to fit the new look of the website. However, I wish this "new" HTML code wasn't also shipped off to my blog from where I have to strip it off.
I appreciated the invite...and I was having fun trying different things last week...this week I"m getting back in the zone and seeing where the style might have issues on different devices, etc. (So far that's constituted just my Mac :) )
Part of me really likes everything about the new layout...and part of me misses the old logo for similar reasons that PEP mentioned. Other than that, I only have a few minor issues that I think are all just a matter of taste for now. I have yet o really start customizing my profile, etc. I also see the cartoon motif, but I'm okay with it. You know if I change my mind I'll say something.
Two things worth noting:
Float overs (like floating over a person's name), is nice and clean. I know we had problems with that before (with lag, links not clicking, etc), but it looks clean.
I was surprised to come to the site and see it with the new layout. I had expected it to take longer to roll out. Nothing bad there, just took me by surprise.

yes getting the back end to work is far more important than cosmetic changes.
CN - all those suggestions - how about "Stolen Images"

Calling Michael Tippett.
Michael,
You initiated this thread.
Are you going to respond in detail and more speedily interactively to all the points being made?
Are you able/intending to introduce greater flexibility in layout and colour choice?
Dungfly Khaki is not to everyone's taste!
What is NP's exact current position with regard to the implementation of revenue sharing?

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. Yes, the lack of comment threading is a bug that we're fixing.
It should be resolved in the coming days.

will be rolling out a fix
a) it should not have broken in the first place
b) this new implementation should have been 110% tested before lumping it on the poor user (like this color scheme!!)
