Why are so many email messages going out under my name? Is this standard? It seems that every time I comment on a story, email goes out telling people who've subscribed, I guess, to that story, that it's been "updated." I feel like tons of spam emails are being sent out under my name, as though I were emailing people, when I'm not.

If the system wants to tell subscribers that a comment has been added, or a flag, or the author has been updated, fine. But please don't send email to people from me, in my name, from my mailbox.

Can someone please explain this?

1.Actual NP e-mail responses to queries raised using the 'contact' button messaging facility.

2.Quicker and more precise responses all round to specific points raised on this forum.

It's automatically set up like that when someone posts a story - it helps to monitor the comments and media that people have uploaded. The author can always unsubscribe to those messages by clicking on the 'unsubscribe from e-mail alerts for this story' link that appears in the 'update' message itself.

As the user who is commenting, these story updates are "from" you, i.e. "PEP just commented on story x"

The only way to prevent those messages being sent out is to stop commenting on peoples' stories, but be assured that these are not spam messages, and they come from the story itself, not from your inbox. 

Alas, you can't control them - only the author of the story can.

PEP & Amyjudd, These are also from RSS feed requested by individuals who I  believe are interested in the story for one. It could also be because it is an update, comment, tag or otherwise. These people can also be interested in you and and your stories or comments, this is what the RSS feed is about and is an automatic result of their actions and yours because these people are using the RSS. I have noticed the same thing regarding sent items to unknown individuals also and that is what i took it as and pretty much I have accepted it to the RSS feed.
 (I account it to that these individuals may like my style or have similar interests and its an easy way too find things out about what is going on, out there in the world)

Thanks, everchanging, and Amy. I thunked I understood the RSS feeds and all this--but guess I didn't. I was going through my mailbox trying to clean it up and there, in outgoing messages, was a HUGE list of messages sent from me, from my address, to various people, letting them know that I'd updated a story!

It just was kind of surprising as I thought that sending emails from members' addresses, as a note from the member, wasn't happening any more. Oh well. Thanks for addressing this!

Here's the recent example.example of what got me all confused. This was in my outbox in my mail. It was sent to Rhonda J. Mangus from me:

Hi Rhonda J Mangus,

Your subscription to "civil rights" has been updated.

PEP updated the story Opinion: An Open Letter to Senator Barack Obama Concerning Talk of an Asassination. .

Of course, the story mentioned isn't mine, as you'll see. I'm assuming that the email was generated when I either a)GS flagged or commented (in this case both at once) or b) added some video/photo material.
