The news is now competitive: New member ranking system

Jordan Yerman

We're introducing a comprehensive member ranking system on NowPublic. Essentially it's a way to identify the most active and effective newshounds on the site.

Your stats - number of stories, comments, “good stuffs” etc.- will be counted and compared with other members to create an extensive leaderboard. Each action on the site will be weighted differently in determining scores (hint: the most influential stats are stories, comments, good stuffs, and front page stories).

Details will be tweaked as we go along, and we'll be looking for feedback to improve it. Let us know your thoughts in the forum once you've checked it out.

Good luck, and may the best NowPublicans win - or at least rank fairly high.

If you'd like to see how the points break down, click here!

How about a prize for number one each week?   A Tee Shirt?  Bumper sticker?  $$$?

First, let me say thank you to the development and "geek" staff that all worked so hard on this. I know you cared very much to put in this kind of work.

That being said, let me again say that I'm not a big fan of a leaderboard. And I truly think that it would be more transparent, and put things more in context, to properly identify staff members as such. Simply lumping them in with other "members" or "editors" isn't transparent at all, as they have the geometrically amplified value of their Good Stuff flags, which count so much more than anyone else's, as well as their power tools to re-adjust the date and re-publish for anyone they choose to in order to gain them more attention, as well as the meetings to agree on which things to flag. Plus they are paid to be here and to post; as one contributor once said, the staff editors are really paid posters. Other people here, other than one active contributor that I know of who's been paid for posts, are volunteers who are dropping in during their free time. There's no way there's any competition in the two states: employees paid for time here; visitors volunteering their participation.

All that is just how the site operates; and what is, is. However, I think that not differentiating between staff members/staff editors and others is lacking in transparency. Why bother to differentiate between Editors, Wranglers, and members and then not follow through with the complete grouping of Staff Editors?

That would be just as easy to do as grouping any other members into a comparative block. So why not? Simple to do: Staff Editors, Guest Editors.

Hmmm...within Editors, I'm #1 for the category of 365 days. What did I win?

A cap, plus chocolate, would do nicely. ;}

We have removed the NowPublic empoyees from the ranking lists. They do get scores, but will not appear in the lists.

Jordan - Even though PEP has made some interesting points, I like the idea!  Thanks to everyone who worked on the development of "Ranking"!

Pep, all this talk of Chocolate intrigues me M-M-M Yum...... and Seed what of this talk of Chicken? Is it Fried?

Do I get some? So many questions, so little time!~

Seriously though, what does the number 23,000 beside my name mean?

All in all I like the leader board regardless of the standings, news is news, readership drives the news, and your news story, regardless of flags, comments, or cut and paste reporting.   My preference is variety of topics to comment on, and research a story, as I  never take a story on face value, preferring to see all sides of the coin, before commenting on it, sometimes with hilarious results, especially with my Photoshop.

That is very fair of you, and very kind to do that. Thank you. I worry about the members just beginning who see all those totals, realize that most of those ahead of them are employees, and feel like they can't compete.

This was such a good thing for you to do! :)

OOOOOH, I like your thinking. Chocolate, LOTS of chocolate.  Me wuvs chocolate.

Hey! You're ahead of me in last 7 days and last 30 days!

Obviously, we ned to form a joint bloc. Any freebies that are chocolate-related, you share with me. Any clothing freebies (beyond the first cap or tee-shirt, OK, I can be grabby..heh heh) I share with you.

Now, there's an idea!       ;}

Errrr, this was meant for Barry. Not sure how it wound up in politisite's discussion box. You hijacking stuff again, politisite?   ;}

BARRY...And congratulations on the #1 by your name.

What all this talk means is that everyone who gets chocolate as a reward for their placings sends it to PEP.       ;}

Hey, a girl's gotta work what she's working!

comment edited by PEP, working without chocolate, poor thing.

I think maybe the placer thingy--vs. the mathifier--may be putting things in odd places.

Tell us, just what are you sorry FOR, politisite!  tell all. whisper.

Barry, the last time we discussed food you were, I believe, in your tatty bathrobe cooling off in front of the refrigerator. Or something like that. At least, that was your story.
