We can not have members highlighting images along with highlighting snippets from stories. This practice results in images served on an outside server showing up on NP. The negative effects of this practice are twofold.
1) images served on another site can be changed/removed/edited at anytime to be advertisements, something irrelevant to the story, a broken image or even worse... something unwanted like porn.
2) by pulling images through highlight you put strain on the bandwidth of the host site, something that actually costs those sites money and slows down their servers.
The practice of embedding images hosted on another site has a name "hotlinking" or "bandwidth theft" and NP can not allow images added this way to stay on the site. Please upload images you own or that are copyright free using our tool or select a photo from our archives. Images embedded in highlight will be removed.
When you highlight an image it is like stealing electricity, somebody else is footing the bandwidth cost of displaying that image on NP.

How about if we're using own own pictures within a post by copying and pasting from an original piece pre-prepared in a "knol" for example? Is that all right?

If it is your own photo then you should upload it to our servers. It is under no circumstances ok to have an image embedded in a NP story that is hosted on another server for the reasons noted above. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for this information, Tina.

Thanks for the reply. So preparing a story in a knol or on our own computer (with our own photos) and then copying and pasting it here without having published it elsewhere isn't allowed?
Is that right?
Instead we have to load our own images on to NP's server - images which then belong to whom? Images that cannot (unlike out stories) be deleted from NP files.
Sorry to be so difficult I'm just trying to get this straight in my mind before I consider uploading my own pictures to accompany any piece I might write.
What does NP do with all those photographs and videos that have been uploaded and cannot be deleted?

Why do you think that images can not be deleted? That is not true. Images can and will be removed by request as only staff can do this. But that is not the same thing as those images being impossible to remove.
If you create a story on your desktop any images in it will be broken as those images likely live on your computer. In order to display them you need to upload them somewhere and we require that they be hosted on our servers for the reasons outlined above.
