Rules for posting pictures and other media off the net

I get some of my story ideas from various periodicals and newspapers. My understanding is that I'm not permitted to save an image that accompanies these stories and post it along with my story on nowpublic. I assume this violates copyright rules, etc. What specifically, other than my own pictures, etc, can I post on nowpublic along with my stories?

Good question Rory.  There are some sources on line for pictures, especially military ones, Combat Camera maintained by the Canadian Forces permits use of pictures on a non commercial basis.

I would think any picture accredited to a photographer or  a news agency would be copyright protected.

Does NP have an agreement with an agency to source pictures?  i.e AP?

Thanks for your post - I know I sent you something in a private message over the weekend - I'm wondering did you want further clarification here or was my answer comprehensive enough?

Those photos with "AP" or "AFP" or "Reuters" in the corner? Don't use 'em. Please remember that just linking back to a copyrighted image does not grant you permission to use it. This is widely misunderstood across the Internet: regardless of what we think copyright law should be... that's not what it is at the moment.

As for Youtube video, same drill: you can use video posted to a content creator's own account (this is easy to check), though they sometimes take it down before long.

I recommend images from Wikimedia Commons (double-check terms of use) . Also okay are product logos and details from website banners, provided that they're immediately pertinent to the story at hand.

If we see items posted to stories that we know are infringing, we will remove them. If in doubt, you can always ask a member of staff- we're here to help.

Amy Judd: Yes please. I'm new to this game and quite ignorant of  all the ins and outs at this point. If you could be a little more specific I'd appreciate it. For example: Pictures fromany news media outlet (such as the nytimes, Time Mag, etc.) are definitely a no-no . . .am I correct? Is there anyway to get around hat however?

Thank you,

Jordan kindly added more as well above. That should answer your question, but let us know!

Thanks that cleared it up and makes it simple in case we do screw up.  Thanks Jordan.

I also have a question about copyright issues -- I have just joined and have noticed this reference to some photos that are within NP material, specifically;

Licence: None (All rights reserved)

I then checked your six levels of copyright categories, however, none of them had anything even remotely related.

Could you please clarify this for me.  My situation is that I have been researching the links between deforestation - drought - bushfires - climate change.  I am currently building my own website, however, I also plan to incorporate advertising elements within the site to pay for doing more research etc....

Input appreciated..

Kind regards
the albatross

To clarify: If it appears on a mainstream media site, presume that you do not have the rights to repost unless it explicitly says otherwise. Media is handled differently than quoted text, as one cannot really "excerpt" a photo.

Individual photo rightsholders (i.e. if you took the photo): your image is yours. You can share with sites like NowPublic without giving up copyright.
