Stories that are flagged as 'link spam'

On NowPublic, we sometimes get some stories posted that are in actual fact, link spam.

If your story is flagged as such, here is the definition on which we are basing that decision:

Link spam is a post designed to drive traffic to another site or to increase that site's placement in search engine results pages.  We also request that any verbatim reprint be placed on NowPublic using our highlight tool to properly credit the original post (even if you are the author).  Using highlight provides a clear link back to the source while preserving the original article's search engine results page placement.

There is a way to turn a link spam post into a news story here on NowPublic, and any staff member will be happy to help you do that if you receive this message along with a wrench on your story.

Thank you, Amy, for discussing this topic because I've noticed that there were some such stories posted with a link to the authors' personal sites, stories, or books that they were promoting.

There's another issue similar in context and that would be those link spams written in the reply section of an individual article.  I've seen that in some pieces posted by members, and I've a few as well - though thanks to you and Jordan, they've been removed.

Thanks for this Amy, I remember over a year ago I posted in this forum about link spam regarding the live streaming spam, it is good that this sort of stuff is now treated as spam.

Great! I've been pointing these out a little more now because I'm tired of the 'Go here for more' links.

Thanks Amy.

Here is what you do to turn your link spam story into an ideal NowPublic post in six easy steps:

1) Download the highlight tool (Firefox Users) or learn the manual code [q url="Source URL"]Quoted Text[/q] (staff can help, just drop them a message)

2) Select an excerpt or snippet of your original article that you would like to feature in your NP article, DO NOT use the entire original

3) Add some sort of original commentary or introduction equal to no less than 20% of the TOTAL word count (quoted text + original commentary | So if you were quoting 80 words you would need to add a minimum of 20 new words in the form of original commentary, but keep in mind 50%/50% is our preferred ratio)

4) Do not add any other links to the original, highlight takes care of that so you don't need to

5) Do not add multiple links to the same source, blog or web page in the original text portion (diversify your sources)

6) Never highlight images directly from your blog or any other website, here's why.

That is all!!! Feel free to message any member of staff if you need extra help with this, we are always willing to help.

Another comment, as a new policy when a post is original and otherwise a great contribution but contains a teaser link at the end inviting people to "read more here" or "see more" or anything of the like, the link will be removed from the story and the rest of the post will be left to stand as is. We feel this will benefit people who post something that is technically link spam when they do not intend to be spamming at all. If such a link is removed from you post please do not add it again or you risk having a spam flag put on your post.

Please note, posting a teaser story and then asking people to watch your YouTube show or download your Podcast is spamming and these links will also be removed.

Thanks!
