I have had several stories show up on the front page sporadically throughout a day and then disappear again. Then I never get a rating of having had a front page story. Does the story need to remain front page for a span of time? If so what is that?
I have no time to play games of hitting "update" or any other trickery. I just post my stories about what intersts me and hope it will interest others.
I am fairly new to this site and found that some of my interests were not being posted much prior to my posts and that people do seem to be interested so I am enjoying my time on the site. I do have more time very late from an and Eastern America perspective (USA and Canadian EST) but I do get recognition from the Western American (PST) quickly and have to wait until next day for the Eastern audience. I think that might put me at a disadvantage.
However, I digress, and my real question is "What constitues a Front Page Story rating?"
Thanks

As far as I am aware, members' front page stories don't update as they should in stats. It's a long term bug in the system. My front page story stats haven't updated in an age.
Hope that helps.

Pageviews and Recommendations dictate which stories make their way to the Front Page, which is also dependent on overall activity on the site. During busy periods, the Front Page changes fairly often, whereas during slow hours the top 5 can seem a bit static. Also, any story flagged as Breaking News will automatically appear in the top spot.
It's worth pointing out that NowPublic top stories are not always the same as mainstream media top stories, which are the result of pure curation. We've enjoyed top stories that covered everything from floods to UFO sightings to sporting events, so we never get bored.
Post newsworthy stories that you care about, and you'll be pleasantly surprised how the community reacts.

Thanks Jordan and Generaldecay,
My question was more in line with the answer from generaldecay above. I was asking how the stats for a Front Page story was recorded since I had seen my go on and off the front page without it registering in the stats.

I see... the # of front page stories reflected on the member page is currently experiencing some buggage. Normally, it updates whenever one of your stories makes the top 5.

Jordan, mine hasn't updated in months, regardless of where I come in the top 5.

Jordan, this story of mine was on the Top 5 for hours yesterday but still I have not gotten credit for a front page story.

Hi there,
yes this is still a bug that hasn't been fixed, as the numbers haven't updated for a while. We are hoping that this will be fixed soon so that the numbers will be reflective of stories reaching the front page, however we'll keep you updated on this.
Just know that everyone's stories are affected; it's not just a few members.
Sorry about this!

Amy,
Can you explain to me how the current Top Story on the Environment Page is a complete CUT&PASTE as well as only having:
17 views | 12 Recommendations
So beyond the BUG how would this be the case?
thanks

Oh I think we may have a mis-communication here.
I was thinking you were talking about the number on our profile page - for example mine says '198' which is wrong and has been stuck at that for ages.

That front page number refers to any slot on the front page, out of the five, that your story would have to get to in order for that number to go up.
The top story in the channels has nothing to do with that bug - that's not a bug; it's just the story that has the most number of recommendations at that time to show as top in the channel. That widget will change throughout the day to showcase different stories.

No miscommunication. Just a second question.

Oh, ok, well then the second part of the reply applies to that.

Hi everyone,
Just to say that I too have no front page stats, although my stuff gets to the front page fairly often. I think it seems to be a general thing...
But it's no big deal.

No one has any updated front page story stats; I don't either. It's not some people being singled out; everyone is the same.
Thanks

there are a mighty high number of bugs on this site... it seems to be getting worse. how about development of new features gets halted until all the existing bugs are fixed like this one and all the others i've been complaining about... Pretty please?
at 13:31 on May 6th, 2009
My last story has had 19 800 views and it was on the front page for days... didn't get counted in my stats either. It'd be nice to see these things fixed.
