New Flagging Management System (2)

Actual News Geezer

 The Partial flagging revisions (proposed graphics are here and here - right-click and save to desktop)

 (back to Agenda)

==========================================

  This ONLY covers:

* Good Stuff
* Breaking News
* Spam

CURRENTLY:
* All flags share the same aggregate score (ie., a story score of 100
COULD be a mixture of Good Stuff, Breaking News, and other, flags;
it's difficult to tell its individual bits).

PROPOSED CHANGE:
* All flags get their own aggregate score (ie., a story would have
multiple aggregate scores: a total of 40 points in Good Stuff,
20 points in Breaking News, and -10 in Spam).

WHY:
* With the current scoring system, when you make a story Breaking News,
it also /immediately/ becomes Good Stuff, which may not be the case.
Likewise, enough Good Stuff flags could make a story Breaking News,
even though it's days old.

Good Stuff
----------

* Authenticated users: 1 Good Stuff point
* News Wranglers: 5 Good Stuff points
* Editors: 10 Good Stuff points
* Super-editors: 20 Good Stuff points

* Threshold to become: 10 Good Stuff points

A story becomes Good Stuff when:

1 super-editor flags it
OR 1 editor flags it
OR 2 News Wranglers flag it
OR 10 authenticated users flag it
OR 1 News Wrangler and 5 authenticated users flag it
OR ... etc. etc. etc. ...

All users can revoke their Good Stuff flag, but this
DOES NOT remove their comments, only their score value.

Breaking News
-------------

* Editors: 10 Breaking News points
* Super-editors: 20 Breaking News points

* Threshold to become: 10 Breaking News points

Super-editors receive new permission: "remove all breaking news"
* Does NOT remove comments or other people's Breaking News score.
* Instead gives the story -100 Breaking News points.

Breaking News scenarios:

* A SINGLE editor flags it (score 10)
* It becomes Breaking News (score >= 10)

* IF STORY IS OLDER THAN FOUR HOURS:
* It no longer is visualized as Breaking News.
* No change to scoring or comments.

* IF EDITOR REMOVES HIS BREAKING FLAG:
* Story is no longer breaking news (score 0)
* A comment is left saying BN was removed.

* IF SUPER EDITOR CHOOSES "remove all breaking news"
* Score is modified by -100 (current score 10, -100, final score -90)
* A new comment is posted explaining why this happened.
* It is no longer Breaking News (current score -90 is not >= 10)

* 5 EDITORS flag it (score 50)
* It becomes Breaking News (score >= 10)

* IF STORY IS OLDER THAN FOUR HOURS:
* It no longer is visualized as Breaking News.
* No change to scoring or comments.

* IF EDITOR REMOVES HIS BREAKING FLAG:
* It loses that single editor's points (-10, current total 40)
* No comments are deleted; a new one is posted on why editor removed.
* It is still considered Breaking News (score >= 10)

* IF ALL FIVE EDITORS REMOVE THEIR FLAGS:
* It loses all its points (returning it to 0).
* 5 new comments posted (one from each editor) explaining removal.
* It is no longer Breaking News (current score 0 is not >= 10)

* IF SUPER EDITOR CHOOSES "remove all breaking news"
* Score is modified by -100 (current score 50, -100, final score -50)
* A new comment is posted explaining why this happened.
* It is no longer Breaking News (current score -50 is not >= 10)

Spam
----

* Editors: -10 Spam points
* Super-editors: -20 Spam points

NOTE! Spam scores will NOT MEAN ANYTHING in the planned revisions.
This is just a framework for when WE DO WANT THEM TO MEAN SOMETHING.

NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE:
* Flagging a story as spam leaves a comment, unpublishes story, reduces score.

POTENTIAL FLEXIBILITY IN THE FUTURE:
* Flagging a story as spam leaves a comment, and DOES NOT unpublish story.
* Only have story has reached a certain threshold does it become unpublished.
* IE., multiple people have to consider a story spam before it is unpub'd.

Leave this discussion with following todos:
-------------------------------------------

* MS: You just need to be informed about all of this.
* MB/MS: We have to go over the J-Tips integration into flagging.
* All: We have to figure how More News Wanted will be implemented.
* All: We have to figure out what to do with Incomplete/Inauthentic/Fishy.
* MB: We need a new icon for "Remove all Breaking News" (super-editors only).
* All: We need to consult with News Wranglers on all this

Again. my attitude toward all this depends on whether or not the former editors are now all wranglers, or what. Have the changes already been made?
