13. Headlines that Grab Attention

If you are going to take the trouble to post a story, you might as well make sure your headline is: a) interesting; and b) descriptive. Remember, this is the news. Your headline should inspire people to invest their time in your work. Here are some tips:

  • Brief is best (btw, this is also an example of an alliteration; see below). For one thing, a headline that takes up only one line signals to the reader that the story is also likely to be sharp and to the point.

  • Use short words. They take up less space and can have real punch, bite, sting, zip, etc. Lengthy utterances frequently precipitate significant disappointment.

  • Use power words. Strong verbs move the mind, descriptive adjectives are vivid.

  • Add Alliterations. Words that start with the same letters, strung in a row, can be very funny and effective. But beware: they can be bothersome.

  • Employ active voice and present tense. Leave the passive to Hamlet (“To be, or not to be...”) and stay in the here and now.
