Newt Gingrich insults Spanish speakers...
Newt Gingrich only opens his mouth to change feet when addressing the American people.
Anyone care to explain how this series of ethnic insensitivies is not insulting? I had no idea until now that I speak a "ghetto" language. - The Angryindian

"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. … We
should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people
learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of
prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto."
However valid his point may be about a common language (and that can
certainly be argued on the merits), why would you refer to languages
other than English as "the language of living in a ghetto"? That's just
bigoted, inflammatory and divisive if you ask me. First he assaulted free speech, then Katrina victims. What's next?
AP:
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich equated bilingual
education Saturday with "the language of living in a ghetto" and mocked
requirements that ballots be printed in multiple languages.
"The government should quit mandating that various documents be
printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up"
to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican
presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to
the National Federation of Republican Women.

I also think you should tag this item as "Opinions".
I know our dropdowns do not allow multiple selections, so the other way to do it is to keep your main "politics" category, then type in "Opinions" (please use plural form) to indicate that this is an op-ed piece.
Otherwise, very interesting.

I don't see how this is an opinion since there is a record of what Mr. Gingrich has said. What he said was blatantly and ethnically bigoted towards a diverse yet very cohesive community that uses Spanish as a common language. I find no ambiguity here in what he meant: … We should replace bilingual education with immersion in
English so people learn the common language of the country and they
learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a
ghetto."
Billingual education in the United States is overwhelmingly conducted in Spanish and the suggestion by many that this elected official to government office is ignorant of such a basic fact does not explain away the insult in his remarks. Now Mr. Gingrich is quoted on my local NPR station for complaining about the way his words were "taken out of context" and "clarified" his statement by saying he really meant to reference American Jews when he mentioned "ghetto."
Neo-Conservative spin control is opinion on steroids. And in such a politically punitive environment, calls for Eurocentric hegemony in the United States by public officials should be called what it is and the racism inherent in Mr. Gingrich's remarks is fact.

Newt, Bilingual Ed and the PC PoliceBy Tony Blankley, (Excerpt)
Last week, my former boss, Newt Gingrich, threw a much-needed conceptual bomb into the jejune public dialogue of presidential aspirants. Amidst the platitudes, banalities and evasions that constitute pre-presidential debate these days, Newt argued (in a speech last weekend) that bilingual education only encourages students to be linguistically "living in a ghetto:
"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly show up" [to vote] ... "The American people believe English should be the official language of the government ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto. ... Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English."
Predictably, the PC riot squad screeched into the media to suppress such clarity of language. Peter Zamora, co-chair of the Hispanic Education Coalition, intoned: "The tone of his comments were very hateful. Spanish is spoken by many individuals who do not live in the ghetto." CNN and other news outlets started raising the question had Newt gone too far this time?
But, of course, there was nothing hateful in Newt's language or in his thoughts: The case is completely to the contrary. Newt has always sincerely wanted to help poor people and legal immigrants become successful, fully integrated American citizens.
Back in 1995, he was mocked for warning the public that inner-city kids would be left out of the computer-filled future if we didn't get computers into inner-city (largely black and Hispanic) schools just as suburban (largely white) parents were providing computers for their kids. Only years later did liberals recognize the very real danger of the socio-economic "digital divide" as a threat to poor kids. Newt was the first to notice the danger -- and he was the first to try to actually do something about it.
Mr. Zamora and the others in the media who have pounced on Newt's mention of the ghetto either willfully or ignorantly misinterpret the significance of the ghetto reference. Originally, the word ghetto was used to describe that part of the city of Venice, Italy, where Jews were required to live.
It wasn't the Jews' fault. It was the fault of the others who wanted to deny the Jews the right to live fully integrated lives. Of course, even in medieval times, Jews around the world spoke a noble, historic language. The fact that it was also spoken in the ghetto was no reflection on the language -- but rather a reflection on the repressive culture in which many Jews were forced to live.

Funny, Think Progress has another angle, Newt's own explanation for his comments:

Gingrich: When I Said ‘Language Of Living In The Ghetto,’ I Meant Hebrew (Or Maybe Yiddish)
Newt Gingrich said this past weekend that the U.S. should abolish bilingual education so that people aren’t speaking “the language of living in a ghetto.”
But last night on Hannity & Colmes, Gingrich claimed his
statement “did not refer to Spanish.” Gingrich insisted, “What I meant
is very clear[],” but then wouldn’t say which language he was referring
to.
Gingrich said, “Now, I’ll let you pick — frankly, ghetto,
historically had referred as a Jewish reference originally. I did not
mention Hispanics, and I certainly do not want anybody who speaks
Spanish to think I’m in any way less than respectful of Spanish or any
other language spoken by people who come to the United States.”

I still find it hard to understand why anyone who cares about recent immigrants having a chance at a better life would pounce on such trivia. Getting an education and learning English is the ticket out.

You are correct, learning functional English should be a requirement to living in the U.S. Equating non-English languages, in this case Spanish, with "The Ghetto" is an insult. If you cannot see the Europocentric bias and ethnic/racial insensitivity inherent within such a statement, then you simply aren't looking.
