NP Rank:
No cause for shame
I found this letter to the editor's desk of the online edition of the Oklahoman newspaper and thought other NP contributors/readers would find interesting. I find it reasoned and worth a moments thought as to why the concept of human liberty has been bastardized into something evil and dangerous to civil society. And it makes me wonder if anyone who uses the term in question as an epithet ever asked themselves just why they feel the need to employ such animosity often accussing the targets themselves of engendering the hostility by virtue of their opposition to conservative opinion. Why is it so many find it so hard to agree to disagree without feeling they are being "punked out"? Could this be the basis of the aggression displayed by pundits such as Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter? - The Angryindian

I'm sick of people saying "liberal” as if it's a bad word or an insult. Our Founding Fathers created this country and its government based on the ideology of liberalism founded in the 18th century. This ideology places basic human rights above all else. Jesus was, according to most accounts, fond of the ideas behind tolerance and basic human and civil rights. This is what it means to be liberal. I served in the Army with many liberal Democrats who were most definitely not anti-America. We proudly served and don't appreciate the implication that liberals are any less patriotic than anyone else.Next time you bash liberal ideology or use the word "liberal” in a negative way, keep in mind that most of our Founding Fathers were liberals.
