Sound Of Urchin “The Diamond” CD Release Party @ CBGB’s
The Sound of Urchin rocked a packed house
tonight at the world famous CBGB’s celebrating
the nationwide release of their latest album, “The Diamond”. Instant Death, lead by Scott Byrne
and Dave Dreiwitz (the bassist from Ween)
opened the night, followed by 2 full sets from Urchin. Gonna Get Got closed out
the party with a midnight set.
Urchin delivered
on their promise to play every song on the new album – including one of the
hidden bonus tracks. Playing over two hours of music, Urchin covered some of
their greatest hits and delivered some surprises like Cherry Mountain
off their first RCA release. JJ French, the founder of Twisted Sister and the manager of
Urchin, made a guest appearance donning a shark guitar, he played two songs
with SOU – his first time playing at CBGBs.
Urchin
delivers on their promise to rock the soul out of any person that stands in
their crowd. Their onslaught of amazing
guitar playing was one of the many highlights of a show filled with great
moments. In a world filled with Dj’s,
loops and drop tuning, the Sound of Urchin’s set was a throwback to a world
where guitar players mastered their instruments and played them like they were
an extension of themselves. Rev. B.ill’s
playing was like a mixture of Jerry Garcia and Slayer with no ego. Robbie Seahag, the other lead guitar player
worked his guitar like he was playing with a toy. He manages to get sounds out of his guitar/amp
combo that has been unseen since guitar players actually enjoyed playing their
instruments. On top of this wall of
guitar sound, the lead singer and drummer of the band, Tomato 11 hit his drums
like he was a barbarian working over a frenzied crowd of religious
followers. As the crowd followed the
bands every move, the energy in an over-played CBGBS actually showed a sign of
life. In a world filled with an indescribable
“Emo” sound, it was a breath of cold and scary wind that a band came into
CBGB’s and just did not give a crap about ROCKING. The world of music lacks people who just lose
themselves in having fun, and the Sound of Urchin reminds us to screw it all.

Road Manager contributed to this story.
