What is NowPublic?
NowPublic is a place where the
general public can post news reports for
others to read. It’s like a
newspaper except all the news comes from the readers. Thousands of NowPublic members have been affected by Katrina. If you have stories you'd like to share about your experiences during this catastrophic time we invite you to sign in and publish them here. Your stories can enlighten others and be a catalyst for re-building.
NowPublic's Missing Person Board
In addition to being a collection of news stories written by it's members, NowPublic was the location one of the first databases of missing persons for people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Since we started our efforts many other professional organizations - devoted solely to this task - have stepped forward. Organizations such as the Red Cross are now better equiped to deal with missing persons issues than NowPublic.
You can continue to post your reports to us but we strongly recommend that you visit the ICRC (Red Cross) and post on their site first. Their missing persons database is located here.
How to Search for a Missing Person Notice
The best way to find out if someone has already posted a
story about a missing person is to include that person’s name in a NowPublic
website address. In the address bar of
your browser type an address with the following structure:
www.nowpublic.com/tags/Name
So, for example, if I was looking for someone called
‘Michael Tippett’ I could type in any of the following:
www.nowpublic.com/tags/MichaelTippett
www.nowpublic.com/tags/Michael Tippett
www.nowpublic.com/tags/Tippett
If there are no postings about Michael Tippett then the page
will say ‘page not found’.
If someone has posted news about Michael Tippett it will
show up on this page. If you have signed up for the site you can get email
alerts whenever changes are made to the ‘Michael
Tippett’ page by clicking on ‘subscribe to Michael Tippett’. You can also get an RSS feed for any person
who is already in the system.

I'm living in South Florida, but my father is living in the Meridian, MS area (Newton, MS actually). I haven't heard from him since last night and was wondering if anyone in that area has power or cell access. His name is Thomas Bush. Yes, that area didn't get the 150 mph winds that New Orleans did and yes, there aren't many people there (as opposed to New Orleans), but the area is not ready for hurricane strength winds. The eye wall passed right over the area last night and I'm concerned about my dad. He's 58 and lives alone in Newton. I can be reached at toddbush@gmail.com

One quick note: If you are going to post a picture: The best way to post is to upload the photo to this post, and add a description of the person as well as their name directly to the photo. This can all be added in the Add Footage option. Also add the person's name in the "Tags" option. This will allow your photo to be circulated around the web, and in search engines.

The Sun Herald is setting up an "I'm OK Line" for folks who left the area to phone in and let their relatives know where they evacuated to. It's a toll free number and the information will be printed in the paper and posted online. You can call (866) 453-1925.

Hello, I am looking for 2 men from the Biloxi, MS area. Their names are Jim Knight and Ken Smith, both white males. Ken is 65 years old , 5'5 approximately and Jim is 61 years old and around 5'11" tall, both have graying hair. They were in a house at 14180 Poplar Court, Biloxi, MS. I am writing sadly with no info on your contacts. I, too, am looking for family in Diamondhead. I was curious if you had ANY info on conditions there. Thank You so much for your time. And GOOD LUCK with your search.
My husband has family in Diamondhead at 8338 Kahala Drive. They stayed in their house, which now has 14' of water. They need to be rescued.
Some people were taken to the Comfort Inn and the Ramada Inn near I-10 at Diamond Head. You may check there. I am certain their phone lines are out too. The number of the Ramada is 228-255-1300.
Finding Missing Persons:
Here are a few tips about using this board that can make your efforts more successful.
1. There are number of ways to add photographs to the site. If you have a photograph of someone who is missing click 'add footage' on this page. This way, your photos will become appropriately tagged and will be easier for people to find.
2. Add the names of the people you are looking for in the 'tags' field when you upload your photos. This will also help people find your photos here and on other search engines.
3. Add your name and contact information to your account page. This way people can contact you directly.
4. To contact the person who posted a photo you just need to roll over the picture and you will be given the option to 'contact the owner'. This will send anything you type in an email to the person who posted the photo.

Thanks for the help, mostly thanks to Cindy Luth (you've been a god send) . Family is all okay some structual damage to one house, another house was lost, but everyone is okay. They have shelter, food, and water. Again thanks for the help! Anyone interested in this area... Residents have been able to call out and receive calls as of Sept. 2. Looks like power might be back on with in a few days.

I stumbled upon your conversation. My name is Toni A. Harrison and I live in Hopewell, Virginia, but I am a native of Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. My grandparents still live there and it was like "pulling teeth" to get them to evacuate. I think that they are in Hammond, Louisiana now, but I am not quite sure. I am not able to reach them via cell. The news stations are not giving any information on Plaquemines Parish. They are both old and fragile and I want to make sure that they are O.K. and that they are prewarned about the condition of the area in which they reside. Please share any information if you are aware. I would be eternally grateful. It is vvvvverrrry hard to hold on when you don't have much to hold on to.
