NOWPUBLIC.COM AND AP DISTRIBUTE “CROWD SOURCED” PHOTO THAT LANDS ON FRONT COVERS OF LEADING MEDIA OUTLETS AROUND THE WORLD
Image by Oman-Based News Blogger Hits Home Pages of AOL and Yahoo!; Appears on Web Sites of New York Times, Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, Forbes and The Guardian
Vancouver, B.C. – June 7, 2007 – A photograph that shows the flooding caused by the Middle East cyclone (see below)—shot by a resident of Muscat, Oman, and distributed Wednesday by NowPublic.com, the leader in crowd-powered media, and The Associated Press — has appeared on the web sites of leading news organizations around the world, including the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.
The image shot by photographer Vijayakumar Narayanan, one of NowPublic.com’s nearly 100,000 members positioned around the globe, was the first that the AP has moved onto its wires and online services since NowPublic.com and AP agreed in February to an innovative initiative designed to expand the world’s access to news as it happens.
Narayanan was able to quickly provide AP with an image that it might not have otherwise had, especially in a part of the world where it can take time to get to a location and transmit. The photo and a written account by Narayanan were transmitted to AP’s global network and displayed by such outlets as the home pages of Yahoo! and AOL, as well as Forbes.com, MSNBC, the New York Daily News and The Guardian.
“The photo from Oman dramatically illustrates the rationale for our relationship with NowPublic.com,” said Lou Ferrara, AP’s Deputy Managing Editor for Multimedia. “NowPublic.com provides us additional
resources to tap the people who are close to the news.”
“This is a transformative event in journalism,” said NowPublic.com Co-Founder Michael Tippett. “Covering a cyclone in Oman is proof of concept of what we can accomplish with AP, even and especially in a
remote location. As we head into the hurricane season in the U.S., NowPublic.com already has 19,000 citizen journalists on the ground between Texas and Florida, poised to
report on breaking news.”
NowPublic.com, based in Vancouver, is the world’s largest participatory news network -- mobilizing an army of contributors in more than 3,500 cities to cover the events that define our world.
Narayanan said, “Never in my remotest dreams did I imagine that I would make history. I intend to continue shooting and see what happens. Citizen journalism rocks!!”
