May 28, 2007 New York - Firefighting seeped into William Kelly Jr.'s blood as he grew up next to a fire station. He joined the New York City Fire Department and served as a volunteer firefighter for 37 years, even as he worked as a paid firefighter. Eventually, he rose to chief of his hometown volunteer department in Levittown, Nassau County. Today, Kelly lives among chiefs.
