Roughly 400 people attended the NY Tech Meetup held this month at EyeBeam on W. 21st St. The event, organized by NYC based meetup.com's CEO Scott Heiferman, brought back fond memories of the industries early days in NYC and of WWWAC meetings circa 1995. I highly recommend that you go to next months meeting if you are in NYC, and If not, start one in your area - there are already a number of other cities up and running.

Held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7PM, a group of 6 to 8 people are given 5 minutes each to
demo to the New York technology community which includes a wide range of people from geeks to investors and entrepreneurs to designers. The demos are followed by a five minute question-and-answer session.

This month Scott started a new practice - after all the demos, the attendees voted on the best presentation - it was unclear if any prizes were being given out - bragging rights I guess.

I'd heard last month's demos were great, and while the Demo's were only so-so this month the event was still very worthwhile. It's been quite a long day for me - so if anyone remembers the names of the companies I'm forgetting please send me a note/comment below:

  • Two unrelated real estate sites StreetEasy and WelcomeMat
  • A post-it note concept site Posticky
  • A company started by another company (I can't remember the name of either company) that wanted to help indie film makers raise money by allowing them to presell downloads
  • An interesting products/development platform called something like NALOH which promised you could create sites without writing a line of html (hence the name... something like not one line of HTML). looked interesting.
  • mobile phone gaming company Cutlass apparently almost won an award at CITA for their game hot-n-cold
  • Infostoria showed off their secure peer-to-peer content sharing product...
  • and probably most notably Internet pioneer Seth Goldstein now CEO of Root Markets, "the first financial exchange for Internet lead generation" gave a sneak preview/demo of Root Exchange - a product the company is launching next week.

After the presentations and before the networking kicks into full swing the mic is opened up to the community for announcements... we're looking for funding... we're looking for developers/volunteers, I'm looking for a job, etc.

I ran into folks I hadn't seen in a long time like Howard Greenstein who I first met during the early WWWAC days, and Brian Kroski who I'd met while pitching a project to Rodale Press some time ago. I also met some great new people, and got a few leads for the open positions here at NowPublic (we're hiring: designers, information architects, programmers, business development, etc. so contact me if you're interested). All in all I'd say that it was a great event and well worth attending. I look forward to next month.
