Arts, Rock/Pop/Etc., By Day, Where to Hear

Brandon Flowers and his Las Vegas dolls are the perfect band to headline the Staten Island half of this two-day, two-borough alt-rock blowout; they represent for urban hipsters without alienating the suburbanites who've bought 2 million of their CDs. David Johansen's killers have never cared for compromise. Interpol's gloomy art rock is sexier than BSP's, but just barely. With new wave sister act Tegan and Sara, U.K. modsters the Ordinary Boys, and electro-jam noodlers Lake Trout.

The Other Side of 'Across the Narrows' Set to Rock

'Across the Narrows' : Pixies & Gang of Four & Built to Spill & Rilo Kiley & Death from Above 1979 & Mando Diao & Nine Black Alps
Keyspan Park 1904 Surf Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11224 Coney Island
Phone: (718) 449-TIXS

Not to encourage anybody’s nostalgia trip, but the openers I’ve never heard of are the only band I don’t want to see on this better-than-Lollapalooza bill. The Pixies revival got ecstatic notices, Gof4 were dandy, Doug Martsch is a player, Rilo Kiley have the keenest songs in indie rock, and the other two are worth a checkout at least. Just don’t forget your sunblock.

'Across the Narrows' : Beck & Polyphonic Spree & Gang Gang Dance
Keyspan Park 1904 Surf Ave

Coney Island’s a hike, but $55 for Beck? Count me in. Sure, his Guero LP suffered from manic depression, but live, this sullied pop huckster respects your ticket investment and knows his responsibilities. If he doesn’t, dozens-deep sunshine-pop cult Polyphonic Spree will surely break their peace-via-music m.o. to beat his ass, and Brooklyn’s new-age drum circle Gang Gang Dance will hex him back to sense. Also: Belle and Sebastian, Raveonettes, Whirlwind Heat.

Though the comeback hype surrounding Oasis’s Don’t Believe the Truth is indeed not to be trusted, the veteran Britpoppers lately have been more vital onstage than even they could’ve expected. Hard-drinking heirs apparent Jet condense 40 years of riff rock into three-minute radio gems. Doves play trippy space pop that’s half as stoned as the Lemonheads’ Dando usually is. With block-rocking guitar guys Kasabian, roots-rock dude Jesse Malin, and Beatles fans the Redwalls.
