Barack Obama is showing signs of getting a little too full of himself. An enthusiastic supporter long ago set up a MySpace page with Barack Obama's name, using it to promote Obama. The Obama camp was fine with this, until presumably the high-powered consultants came in and found themselves powerless versus an ordinary Joe Schmo. On the internet, you are not entitled to own an account bearing your name at every website out there. It's first-come, first-serve, except when someone is profiting off your name and image, and even that is a fuzzy area. Obviously, big-media MySpace thought it was best to ensure that the real Barack Obama had some right to a barackobama MySpace page, even though you or I would likely not have such a right to a page bearing our name.
...bloggers reacted negatively to his team’s move, saying they had betrayed the free-wheeling spirit of the internet.
Daily Kos, a leading grassroots blog for Democrat activists, said alienating “your biggest supporters is generally not a wise thing to do”.
Another blogger wrote on Atrios: “I really don’t understand the tendency to treat volunteers as disposable.”
