Alberta Minister of Sustainable Environment Ted Morton has given oil companies the okay to begin seismic exploration of oil sands under Marie Lake,  a small, pristine, fish-laden body of water about 300 kilometers north of Edmonton. The announcement was made today by a department spokesperson on behalf of Morton, who has consistently ignored public protests from Marie Lake and other northern environmental organizations.

It was earlier this year that the very same Ted Morton signed a contract permitting the clear-cutting of 800,000 acres of forest in east Kananaskis in spite of the protests of thousands of Albertans.  One has to conclude that the Stelmach Conservative government in Alberta values industry above environment.  The label of his ministry, 'Sustainable Environment", is a farce.
