Bush may mandate that automakers increase the fuel efficiency of their veh icles by raising the CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standard, which has been languishing for 20 years. He is also expected to ask for more production of alternative fuels.
If true, raising CAFE will irritate the flailing U.S. auto industry. Funny how he waited to suggest such a thing until after he is no longer is seeking office, as well as after the disastrous midterm elections.
