The holiday of Chanukah is upon us, a time for family and jelly donuts. While some whine about the fundamentalist origins of the holiday others look to the brighter side and appreciate it for its traditions and unifying elements.
Enjoy the dreidels and the latkes.
So Mr. Hitchens, it's about family not militant Judaism. For many, the history of the holiday takes a back seat to finding excuses to get together during the winter to light some candles and sing old songs. This isn't ignorance but rather an appreciation for the value in culture and tradition.

This is a Hanukah treat from my non-Jewish sister. I converted and my family always takes into consideration that December has changed for the Joneses.

Last night was the first night of Hanukkah. Although I'm not very observant anymore, tradition is still important to me, and I do make a point of lighting the menorah every year. And if I forget, my non-Jewish wife reminds me.

I have fond memories of Chanukah as a child.

That article from Slate is a complete travesty and I may very well never return to them as a reader. Judaism has always held enlightened thought and education in the highest esteem. While other cultures throughout history have condemned literacy and social justice, Jewish people have championed those values.

I did think the article in Slate was important if only to provide a more indepth historical context for the holiday, but the conclusions drawn based on that history were baloney (of the kosher variety of course).

Here is a nice cheap and cheerful chanukkiah that we are using at home, together with some equally bright colourful dreidel spinners!

This is the Manorah I keep in my office. It is a nice way for me to share with my coworkers a little piece of Judaism.

Good stuff. Mr. Hitchens wrote a whole lot of nothing! It is the Holiday season. Maybe he hasn't gotten laid for a long time. That makes people uptight and angry. Thanks for the story, Ryan.
