NP Rank:
Equal education for all Arkansas Students
How can a pregnant teenager be denied education? Yesterday in Drew County a Pregnant Teenager that has attempted to follow her Doctors order of being Homebound was denied rights to her education. The excuse that was given was that Homebound Instruction was not offered at Drew Central School. Instead the ALE prgram was offered to her,It clearly states in the Homebound Instructions from her Doctor, she is not to attend classes, she will be Homebound until after the baby is born. How much clearer can that be, she does not have the option of attending classes due to her pregnancy. Late yesterday evening through a source at Crossett School District it was brought to my attention that Homebound Instruction was to be offered to those students that could not attend regular school due to Medical reasons. When confronted with this information Drew Central High School Principal reluctantly refused to put his own words in writing, he requested the information from the Doctor, which consiquently was already delivered to the Drew Central Counsoulers office just weeks before. The ARSBA, since the 1980's have been focused on retooling the public school system so that every student can have an equal education. That does'nt mean just the students that fit the profile that the School Officials want to have an equal education.ARSBA Handbook , on page 1 chapter 1 Partners for Prgress, this is the statement that caught my attention while reading. If they honestly believe that each and every child should have equal education, then how can Pregnant Teens be denied the right to the same education as the entire school.Would this not be the same as any other Descrimination? I do not premote Teen Pregnancy, but these things do happen, should they be punished by not letting them have the same opurtunities as other Teens, being pregnant is natural. Arkansas schools are included in a report of fudging dropout rates and inflated graduation rates. |
