flickr staff: benefit of the doubt?
i want to make a statement about flickr staff that acknowledges something probably quite true:
The staff is likely burned out by the sheer number of requests and messages from users. This is why they have placed automatic handlers into the system. If a number of "complaints" are received by the automatic handlers, a person's flickr account is blocked, NIPSAd, or even sent to the top of the queue so that a real human at flickr, say Michelle, Heather, George, Stewart, etc, is compelled to do something. The problem is, they do not make the time to really investigate the reports and the flagging. i DO consider this a double point:
- Staff SHOULD make the time to be sure they are not executing the innocent, victimized by an automatic system being abused by other members (including multiple accounts made by other users).
- Staff probably feel that there's no way to MAKE that time, but with all the income that flickr must have, they certainly should (should) be able to hire more staff to handle, with humanity, the situations brought to them. Besides, slow responses are better than fast BAD responses. What happened to "err on the side of caution" that Stewart Butterfield stated six months ago? Was that just lip service to PR smoothe the Rebekka situation that black-eyed flickr in the media?
Am i excusing flickr staff for all that has been happening?
NO.
But i am demonstrating my awareness that they may have started out with better attitudes, better intentions and better actions. i am also TRYING, in my classic, autistic naivity, to give you SOME manner of "Benefit of the Doubt" that you're not all sociopathic jerks. i have sent you many angry messages. How about considering WHY? How about considering that maybe i've been done a bad by you and people like sewell.
Flickr Staff: Please re-evaluate YOUR SELVES. It is CLEAR that there are a lot of abuses going on. Abuses of the system by users like dave sewell, AND abuses of the system by yourselves. You shouldn't in any way respond emotionally to things, but you're doing it and you're harming innocents. A friend, who is KNOWN by sewell to associate with and support me, has just had her account nailed with messages blaming her for child porn. This woman is an innocent bystander. She has children that she feircely protects. She's a user of flickr who likes the flickr product very much. She connected to me because my ORIGINAL dysamoria account showed her that there were others out there like her. That's the product of flickr doing a great job of bringing people together. She has communicated in my own personal blog, where sewell can see her, and she has stated, like i have, that flickr has been a "life-line" and i am sure that the attacks on her are too coincidental to NOT involve systemic abuse from dave sewell. The entire reason i am FIGHTING you folks STARTED at DAVE SEWELL.
Am i still pissed?
You Bet.
