Heath Ledger: Enough Already
When can we stop the teeth-gnashing and rending of garments over the death of another celebrity who "couldn't handle his fame"? What is senseless is this outpouring of grief over a 28-year-old who chose drugs -- prescription or otherwise is immaterial -- over facing life like the rest of us.
Why isn't there a fraction of such sadness and mourning over the deaths of children, elderly people, murder victims, victims of domestic abuse, victims in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time. . . . who die every hour of every sungle day in America alone?
How many times must we hear about the "senseless" tragedy of Ledger's death before we look around and see even less senseless deaths in our own communities? How many times must we be commanded to think about "the potential of such a young rising star" before we think about the potential of the young people who die every day in America's poorest neighborhoods?
ENOUGH! already. He wasn't Jesus Christ and he wasn't Elvis. He was another 28-year-old who died Wednesday, one of hundreds throughout the U.S. Cry instead for the babies and young adults and senior citizens who died because no one cared, because a monster parent beat her to death, because random street gang violence killed him as he was walkiing home from baseball practice.

I think you ought to heed Anderson Cooper's advice and not create a knee-jerk reaction that contains rumor over fact (which have yet to be conclusively established). As the facts are coming to light, it's seeming to look like Ledger died of exhaustion, rather than in the manner you put it (which was based on early gossip). The young man had a lot going for him and was excited about his film and production projects, and it's most likely he died accidentally. I wouldn't be surprised if they do establish that he died of literal exhaustion with the recommended dosage of medication, as I too suffer from insomnia, take pain medication and know that if I go to bed after 24 hours of not sleeping, I have to sleep on my back, otherwise I can't breathe/will suffocate myself (because my body is just too literally tired to "work", and my regular dosage of pills is calibrated to a body that is working properly...if you do not sleep, your body and its organs' functions deteriorate). Happened to me the other night after a very long 24-hour stint at the design station. It's reported that Ledger was found face down in bed....

You're entitled to your opinion, but you missed the entire point of the story. Whether he died from a drug overdose or more "acceptable" causes doesn't matter a tinker's damn. What does matter, the poiint I was trying to make, is that few, if any, notice when another 6-month-old or 60-year-old statistic (that's what they are, right, if they're not movie stars or sports figures?) dies from starvation in the richest country in the world. No one gives a second thought to women who get beaten up by their husbands regularly.... but when a Heath Ledger dies, the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments begins from coast to coast.
