John Ladenburg Opens Candidacy for Attorney General

Democrat John Ladenburg has opened his candidacy for Attorney General, announces Rick in Eye on Olympia today, after weeks of hinting he would take on incumbent Rob McKenna. Stated Ladenburg in a press conference, “Four years ago, voters rolled the dice on a partisan, ambitious politician who had never tried a case.” According to the candidate, this has resulted in an office “that issues press releases and public service announcements, but hasn't made progress on basic consumer protection and public safety issues.”

McKenna, a Republican, has confirmed over the past few months that will run for re-election. Ladenburg’s “formal kickoff tour” will begin in spring states the post. McKenna has worked “on a variety of anti-gang and consumer protection bills,” and has won “some high-profile victories against spammers.” Even so, Ladenburg insists McKenna has not done enough to target “identity thieves, despite near-ubiquitous television advertising prominently featuring McKenna warning consumers about identity theft.” In addition, Ladenburg add that it is important “to have an Attorney General at the state level who will stand for fundamental personal freedoms.”

Huskey Football Recruits Best in Years

Bob Condotta over at Huskey Football Blog, is singing about the UW signings in his post today. UW coaches will be “basking in the glow of one of the school's best recruiting classes in years.” Fourteen players have already signed their letters. A list is available on the school’s website. There’s little surprises left, especially now that Kevin Prince has announced that he's going to UCLA.

Today at 2:30 pm, coach Tyrone Willingham will meet the media and talk about the recruits for the first time, as the school “fully expects that all letters will be in by then.” Condotta isn’t sure if there will be any more news at the press conference, “but there are rumblings that he could be close to filling both of the assistant coach jobs.” The vacancies are for the running backs and tight ends/special teams. He states in his post the “rumor is that former Syracuse offensive coordinator Brian White was in town last weekend interviewing for the running backs job.”

Rick Steves Speaks at Town Hall Tonight

Rick Steves speaks for free tonight at Town Hall, announces Seattlest. Last time he spoke there he argued about “how important it was for ‘regular Americans’ to get out and see the world.” We need to learn about how other countries work and how they view the U.S., in addition to “what really useful mass transit looks like.” Thanks to the Bush presidency, it costs us a bit more to “broaden our horizons” these days, now that “the British pound is worth US$1.96, the Euro is US$1.46, and the Canadian dollar is a few thousandths of a cent from being worth exactly 100 U.S. pennies.”

Regardless, Steves thinks we can’t afford to “sit at home and mope,” hence the free “European Travel Skills” class. According to the post, “he'll teach you how to pack the right attitude and spend your money where it counts.” Steves admits travel in Europe isn’t cheap. “But twelve million Americans – the vast majority of them normal working people – had a blast in Europe in 2007. So don't mope. Just get smart and stretch that wimpy little dollar.”

Jill Scott Kicks off new Tour in Seattle

Ernest Jasmin, blogging on the New Tribune’s Bring the Noise, reviews diva Jill Scott’s concert last night at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. The tour is “in support of her new DVD ‘Live in Paris’ and her third studio album, ‘The Real Thing:: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3.’” Scott was backed by a “tight” 11-piece band and “went from sultry purr to booming crescendo.” It was truly “the sort of A-list R&B show that this market has been starved for.”

One thing that was clear, even from a distance, was the 35-year-old singer's personality. “Her sassy confidence, infectious enthusiasm and a sometimes raunchy sense of humor kept her connected to the capacity crowd.” “A Long Walk” was a “crowd pleaser” and “Do You Remember” was reinvented as a “funky dirge,” while Scott hammed it up with “slinky, slo-mo dance.” Jasmin, who admits in the post that he had allowed his interest in Scott wane over the past few years, said the singer had “taken her sweet time” between albums, and that her last Seattle appearance was in 2004.
