Maple Leaf Fans Think Too Small

Howard Berger on Hockey Buzz says the Maple Leafs and their fans have to start thinking big. He writes that it’s “clear that the majority of Maple Leafs fans would like to see Brian Burke in the general manager's chair, but do not believe it is possible.” This attitude is endemic to the Leafs Nation and has to change. “From the top of the hockey club to its most casual supporter, it is time to start thinking outside the box.” Because the club is so “ingrained in failure,” the fans don’t ever “embrace the improbable.”

Berger states in his post that when Burke arrived in Anaheim, the Ducks fans never figured “that the new GM would acquire two of the three best defencemen on the planet.” But Burke did and “he has the Stanley Cup ring to prove it.” We need to start envisioning “things that are difficult.” He wouldn’t be an easy acquisition, “but that should not dissuade the Maple Leafs from courting him with all their might.” He should be first on their list.

Local Beauty Pageant Says God Disapproves of Tarot

Over at the Torontoist, Patrick Metzger reports that Toronto resident Stephanie Conover, current Miss Canada Plus 2007, was “invited to judge a local beauty pageant, only to have the invite retracted because some of her hobbies were deemed a little too demonistic.” The 2008 Miss Toronto Tourism contest takes place on February 2. Conover accepted the invitation to be a judge and “sent along a brief bio detailing some of her interests, including knitting, reading, yoga, reiki, and tarot card reading.” The later received notice from pageant organizers “revoking her invitation because the latter two practices constitute ‘the occult’ and ‘witchcraft.’”

Metzger goes on to say in his post that the letter noted reiki and Tarot “are not only unacceptable to Jews, Muslims, or Christians, but to God Himself.” It even quoted Leviticus 20:6: “I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums or spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut them off from his people.” Metzget points out that “the Miss Toronto Tourism pageant has no any apparent affiliation with the Toronto Convention & Visitors Association or other quasi-official tourism organization.” A practicing Wiccan, Conover “was shocked to receive the letter” and stated that “Reiki and tarot card reading are both positive practices that have nothing to do with 'dark forces.”

Toronto Teems Hip Hop Away from Violence

Writing for Blog T.O., Sameer announces “Breaking the Cycle: the Canadian Break Dancing Championships presented by UNITY Charity at York University this Friday.” The night will showcase some of our nations greatest break dancers with “all the proceeds will be going to Hip Hop Away from Violence, UNITY's high school anti-violence outreach program.” Hip Hop Away’s mission is to help youth “make positive life choices through positive forms of self-expression.”

“In addition to the break dancing championships,” Sameer reports, “Breaking the Cycle will also feature live hip hop performances, DJ sets, photography, and even some spoken word.” UNITY has been in operation since 2003, serving over 20 high schools and over 15,000 youth in Toronto, Peel, York, and Durham regions. Go For Tea: the Hippest Bubble Tea Café in Town

In a recent post on Spotlight Toronto, Suresh invites readers to Go For Tea, a popular bubble tea hangout for the young and hip. Go For Tea is “a slick lounge with one of the most extensive tea menus” available. The menu offers “a mix of Taiwanese and Chinese” with starters like “toast with an assortment of toppings (milk custard, chocolate, garlic, condensed milk).” The food is only “so-so,” but most people come to hang out, play card games, and drink bubble tea. “The biggest seller was the Taro Slush which can be ordered with Tapioca or Jelly. The taste of the drink is similar to sweet potato.” Green Mango Slush, “a combination of dairy-cream and mango juice,” is also popular.

According to Suresh, the staff are quick and do “a great job of keeping the service consistent.” It has a “late night cafe feel, with plenty of room for group seating and single tables for two.” It’s “chic” and “appeals to a young crowd by merging the design qualities of a high end Asian restaurant, the social ambience of a European lounge, and the varied menu offerings.” Suresh concludes that there’s no better place “to hang out if you love bubble tea.” Location details and café hours are listed in the post.
