If the President of Pakistan were on a different helicopter today the world may have been a different place. One of the helicopters in the president's envoy suffered a "technical" malfunction and crashed. Here's the story.

Chopper crashes while escorting Musharraf in Pakistan

A military helicopter crashed in today while it was escorting President Pervez Musharraf over Mujhoi, Pakistan.

Four people were killed and five were injured in the crash, which officials blamed on a "technical fault." Musharraf arrived at his destination without incident, according to media reports.

"It took off after President Musharraf left," Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad tells Reuters. "The president is safe and sound. He has reached his destination."

The Associated Press describes the crash scene: In Mujhoi, hundreds of residents and scores of soldiers swarmed around the still-smoldering wreckage, 100 yards from the Jhelum River. Part of the helicopter's tail jutted above the crowd. At least four ambulances, sirens wailing, left the scene carrying injured people. Witnesses said the helicopter's engine was on fire before it hit the ground but there was no indication it had come under attack. Minutes before, two other helicopters flew past the village, they said.

Truthfully, when I first heard that this happened I thought for sure it was an attack. Actually, it may come out that it was a terrorist attack but we really can't tell as of yet. The situation on the ground in Pakistan is perilious because there are vast lawless regions that are home to al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

In the Waziristan region there are a few dozen Pakistani soldiers missing who were last known to be engaged in a battle with insurgents. Osama bin Laden called for the overthrow of Pakistan in one of his last rants and who knows how much a difference he can still make in the region. If things continue to boil over in Pakistan we might have our answer. BigT

BigT, we probably will never know the exact circumstances surrounding this incident. Pakistan is definitely a hot spot with much instability and little democracy. The complicated relationship between the USA and Pakistan muddles things even more.

BigT, your right world would  be a different place if he got on the wrong helicopter.

Big T, in keeping with the spirit of the comments above...

Its a good thing the second helicopter, which did not crash, did not fall suddenly to the ground, otherwise it would also have crashed.
