October 25-2007 / Update/British Columbia: Six slain Execution Style in Surrey-Two Innocent Victims !
Update October 25, 2007
The Vancouver Province today reported a motive for why these drug dealers were murdered.
The Drug dealers crossed the unbroken rule many cross, they used more of their own product than they sold, hence their Drug Lords looking for their money, took their lives, and the lives of two bystanders.
Opinion
Barry Artiste, Now Public Contributor
The Murders all boiled down to simple ecopomics "Supply and
Demand" . The Murdered Drug Dealers snorted an what seemed to be a endless
and readily available "Supply" of drugs they were suppose to sell,
and the Drug Lords who supplied them with the drugs didn't get paid and
"Demand" they pay with their lives.

Update: October 24, 2007
The Province newspapers states the following;
Various Media reports are coming in, one brief excerpt on this story from The Province Newspaper.
Police say it has all the hallmarks of a gang-related hit, but two innocent men got caught in the crossfire.
A
homicide team investigating the murder of six men in a north Surrey
apartment Friday say two of the victims were men who found themselves
in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Ed Schellenberg, 55, an
Abbotsford repairman, and Chris Mohan, 22, a resident of the area, were
both killed along with four others who police say were targeted because
they "were engaged in criminal activity and led criminal lifestyles."
Those four were identified as Michael Lal, 26; his brother Corey Lal, 21; Ryan Bartolmeo, 19; and Eddie Narong, 22.
All the victims except Schellenberg were Surrey residents.
Peter German, the Lower Mainland RCMP district commander, called the killings "an outrageous act of violence."
"These
murders are a product ... of the combination of guns, gangs, drugs and
violence," said German. "This is a blight on our society."
Six investigative teams comprising a total of 150 officers are working the case, said Rideout.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-543-9217 or Crime Stoppers.

Ed Schellenberg, 55, an

The Province has learned the man, since identified as Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford, was shot in the head execution-style along with five others -- another media source state that three Asian men, two believed to be brothers in their early twenties and two unidentified men, with the other two victims to be Caucasian men.
Other Media Sources state identified the two brothers and Family and friends are mourning the loss of brothers Michael and Cory Lal, who have been identified by media as two of the victims of a mass murder in Surrey, B.C.
The Province Newspaper reports Another source said the killings involved Lower Mainland gang members and the crack-cocaine trade.
Police wouldn't say if the killings were part of a drug war.
"We're open to all those possibilities. We're looking at every possible angle," he said.
Numerous police investigators arriving at the scene yesterday were members of the Abbotsford Police Department.
Abbotsford is home to the United Nations gang, which police have previously said has been dealing drugs and guns since 2002. It is made up of members from various ethnic backgrounds and was started by high-school friends from around the Fraser Valley.

UPDATE: October 22, 2007 METRO VANCOUVER - A gas fireplace repairman of middle age (actual age unknown) but from the file photo in this story, looks to be mid-late 50's was working on the top floor of a Surrey apartment building was a victim in the slaughter Friday of six people, five of the victims believed to be three Asian Canadians and two Caucasians in a single targeted attack.
Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford, had been called out to the Balmoral Tower at 9830 East Whalley Ring Road hours before police were notified of a possible gas leak on the top floor of the building, where bodies were discovered by firefighters a short time later. While some of the victims in the unprecedented mass killing were known to police, Schellenberg is believed to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, police sources say.
Barry Artiste's investigative efforts to date on another Ed Schellenberg who may be or may not be the same person, though this Ed Schellenbergs residence was in Langley in 1993, a scant 20 or so miles from the other Ed Schellenberg who now resided in Abbotsford.
It is quite possible this murder victim is the same Ed Schellenberg who gave expert witness testimony to RCMP on the David Millgaard (who was wrongfully convicted in a rape/murder case in Jan-31, 1969) in December 14, 1993 . This Ed Schellenberg from Langley, British Columbia, Wayne Williams, and David Millgaard all lived together at one time in Calgary, in their youth, subsisting on panhandling to coincide with their transient lifestyle.
Further media investigation will determine if this individual is one and the same, though seem to be of the same age around mid to late 50's and based on past events, possibly the same man. Updates will follow as more investigative efforts by this Now Public Contributor develop and confirmation is established.
Below is a link on witness statements given to the RCMP regarding the Milgaard case in which an individual of the same name as Ed Schellenberg was interviewed.
http://www.milgaardinquiry.ca/Oct4_TDRCaldwell.shtml then refer to document # 045348 =Statement of Edward Schellenberg dated December 14, 1993. This is an actual statement dating his activities from 1968 when he and Milghaard first met. This statement was given to Regina RCMP officers M.E. Jorgenson and Cst. J. Dyck.
Additional Photos of todays news are posted for this story.
Updates will be forthcoming as event unfold.

UPDATE October 21-2007 This has now been confirmed to be a targeted multiple homicide in Surrey, originally thought to be a murder suicide, is now confirmed by media as a murder. What residents thought was a gas smell from a gas leak, firemen called to the scene found a grisly scene with 6 dead in various states of decomposition. The Whalley District is well known as a Criminal "Epi Centre" of drugs and prostitution.
Update Oct-21-2007 Police state the residence was once home to Wanted Drug Dealer Malakias Swales whose whereabouts are unknown. Malakias Photo is posted in this story. Vancouver Province It appears that it was home to Surrey's most wanted criminal as recently as last year. Malakias Swales, 36, has been described by Surrey Mounties as a top-end drug trafficker -- the "big-box retailer" of the local drug trade.
Swales had listed his address as an apartment in the 9800-block of East Whalley Ring Road according to a three-year lease he signed in Februray 2006 for a Chevrolet Corvette.
Yesterday, Carr said he is aware of Swales, but has no idea whether he has any connection to the mass homicide.
"We don't know who's connected at this time. We don't even know who those victims are," said Carr.
Swales has been on the lam since July 2006 after being charged with more than two dozen counts including trafficking, firearms possession, possession of property obtained through crime and evading police.
VANCOUVER -- At least six people were found slain in a Surrey highrise by firefighters Friday after initial reports of a gas leak proved to be a multiple homicide.
The RCMP was called to the 15th floor of a highrise apartment building at 9830 East Whalley Ring Road at 4:30 pm Friday.
Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said at least six adults were found dead in the apartment, but he would not specify their race or gender.
Sgt. Roger Morrow of Surrey RCMP speaks to the media outside the King George Place in Surrey, the scene of at least 6 homicides Friday
"In 25 years of policing in the Lower Mainland, I don't recall another single incident where we've had this many casualties," said Carr.
He said it's too early to tell how the individuals died.
"It's hard to say whether its gang-related, some sort of attack on a group of individuals, or whether it's a murder-suicide. Certainly it's a concern to us and we understand it's a concern in the community."
Surrey RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow described the scene as grisly.
"What it looks like is a very dramatic homicide scene," Morrow said. "What I've been told is that they've had blood about their faces."
Carr said that generally, Surrey is a safe community, but added "at this time it's difficult for us to say who's safe and not safe."
Carr said it's going to take the better part of the night and through the weekend for several homicide teams to determine what happened. As of 10 p.m. homicide investigators had been on the scene for a couple hours. "There are a hundred more apartments in the building and we have a lot of canvassing to do and a lot of work to find out who these people are," said Carr.
He wouldn't speak to the nature of the injuries, but said police have an idea how a couple of individuals died.
Fire officials and a hazardous-materials team were first to arrive on scene, treating the incident as a possible hazardous materials incident.
The incident led to sections of King George Highway, East Whalley Ring Road and Fraser Highway being closed to traffic and people urged to stay away from the area.
The King George SkyTrain station - the last stop on the Expo Line - was cordoned off and shut down, with all trains rerouted to the Surrey Central station.
TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the King George station was closed for three hours and buses were not allowed to go through, which ended up clogging up traffic during the afternoon rush.
"Anyone who had to get out of the King George station were out of luck," he said.
The nearby Days Inn on King George Highway was locked down by police shortly after five for about three hours, said Marie Huesmann, a front desk clerk at the hotel.
"No one was allowed to come in or leave the building," she said. "No vehicles were allowed to leave. The police told us there was a gas leak and not to turn on the heating or air conditioning and no smoking. The police officers were very strict about that."
Traffic resumed and hotel customers started entering the building around 8 p.m, said Huesmann.
Sheila Rufino, who lives in the building that was locked down, said she was surprised to find police surrounding it when she returned home around 9:30 p.m.
She said there was a lineup to get in the building and police were questioning people before they allowed them to enter.
"I think they took pity on me because it was raining and I had two little ones. They asked me questions like what's your name and what unit I lived in and what time I left at," Rufino said.
Morbarak Sikder, who lives in a townhouse next to the highrise, said traffic was so backed up on 100th Avenue when he tried to come home from grocery shopping that he drove to a friend's house on 102nd Avenue and waited there for two hours.
When Sikder returned to the area about 9 p.m, TransLink officials told him he had to park his car behind the Days Inn and walk to his door.
"There's lots of police. They are letting people go in the building but they can't go out," he said.
Carr said one of the things police are trying to determine was why the incident was initially reported as a gas leak. [/q]

Barry Artiste, thanks for getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for four hours. If new developments justify it, I'll renew this flag for another cycle; it's getting some pretty wide coverage.

Barry Artiste, Thanks for this. It's in more detail and presented in a style that is more informative and vivid than CTV.

Thanks for the Flags, for some NP readers who follow my ongoing Crime and Punishment stories, most can draw a conclusion who was behind this.
With the rash of crime becoming more and more prevalent, and with my previous story on the liklihood of the US based Mogol Motorcycle looking to come to Western Canada, I am sure the Hells Angels here will be friggin overjoyed, expect more violence and murder, perhaps Now Public Readers can see why I am a tad Pee'od with our Provincial Courts and Judges revolving door policy with criminals and who don't see the big picture while they accuse the Conservative Governments accusations that BC is a Hotbed of ineffective sentencing by our Court Judges. Let's face it, Law enforcement need money, money Big Time, mamby pamby coddling of criminals in this province and political correctness need to go out the window if we want to feel safe in this province. VPD Chu and his predecessor hit the nail on the head, reiterating what I have just said. VPD Police Chief Chu on the other hand went that extra mile in hoping to establish ConAir. Personally I think Chu should be our next Mayor, or better yet Premier, the man has Balls, something not seen since Jamie left recently and hopefully will continue, regardless of what city council ineffective councillors try and do to stop him. The first step is for the Premier to show leadership and give VPD and RCMP a blank cheque to clean up this toilet we call the GVRD, and bring it back as Canada's most beautiful province in the world, Bar None. Trust me, if I didn't love my Job, I would be the first in line to run as a politican. Thanks for listening.

Two scenarios will happen in the Homicide case, the dangers officers will face performing apartment to apartment searches for suspects, will first be met by the sound of residents toilets flushing enmass to get rid of drugs, needles, chemicals (First Clue) secondly the noise will be quite apparent, third these acts most likely lower the city of Surrey's potable water supply and the resulting effluent and drugs will raise tax the Surrey Sewage treatment plants sewage levels,(Okay I made the third one up, Dark humour , in a bad situation). Soooooooooo, we can expect more arrests in the building as Meth labs and Grow Ops are rife not only in the building, but the surrounding areas as well. Expect a long line of residents to be leaving hastily from the building and area to avoid arrest. Wonder how long the line is at the Whalley Street Skytrain Station? All of this a theory of course, but most likely a sound one.

Barry Artiste, good stuff. I also like your context you've added in your comments. These things don't happen in a vacuum.

Hey, Barry Artiste, thanks for getting this up so quickly... I'm removing the urgent flag for this story for the time being. If there are any new developments, please let me know.

I received a Private mail comment from a Now Public reader who I have never seen on here before, I do not recall her posting any stories, regardless perhaps she joined to write to me in her Christian Eloquent Verbage. Apparently this reader took exception to my story here on murder victim Ed Schellenberg.
I would have preferred she enter her comments publicly, but for unknown reasons she decided to do it privately.
I was very civil in my response to her tirade. She took offense to my background check of a man who coincidentally has the same name and general location as Mr. Schellenberg whose religous alliances seem similar to this Mr. Schellenberg. I in no way stated on here that they were one and the same man. I was just following what some call journalistic instinct. Perhaps some here would like to know why I background checked the Murder victim. For one, Mr. Schellenbergs age is not listed anywhere, and background info, usually so prevelant in most mainstream media is devoid of any worthwhile detail. Though the second murder victim Chris Mohan, who media state immediately as age 22, as well his details and background are in greater detail than Mr. Schellenbergs.
Those who know me, know my career for the last 20 odd years is in investigations, forensics and research. I am very good at it, and have more work than I can handle at time. A lot of my time is to investigate, inspect, and research extensively in criminal illegal drug manufacturing facilities and only deal in facts for various agencies who rely on my expertise, whether it is fraud, criminal activity, biological, chemical and radioactive toxic agents, death, or human health risks etc. I see more seedy underworld and human misery in the lower mainland in a month than most will ever see in two lifetimes. You have to have a strong resolve, I have to photograph it, attend it, inspect, test and sample it and put into a report for my clients.
Not a pretty sight.
If I were not good at what I do, I would think my next job would entail fries and a large drink.
What piqued my curiosity initially was the absence of detailed info on this victim, particularly media not mentioning age, or even middle age. Was he a youth? Twenty or thirty something? or an Old man? This left me curious, as I was going to investigate all victims once the information was released to the public.
She stated I googled my research, granted in most cases I did, in this particular case in the transcripts, I did not, the name rang a bell from past events I heard or read about, possibly through work activities. So I did what most do I did research. I am no journalist by any stretch of the imagination, but have interacted with many over my 20 odd years, and all are my close friends, who sometimes I rely on research as well.
So unfortunately this reader took exception to my story, and for that it's unfortunate, I am not one to titillate with scandal, just facts. The fact being, when the pieces of the puzzle start to come together a bigger picture unfolds. Do I think these two people named Ed Schellenbergs are one and the same? It is not for me to say, but for readers to read the facts, research on their own, read the media reports and come to their own conclusions. I have.
Thanks for reading, in future, any comments good or bad are welcome in my comments sections, without any verbal retribution from me, that is your opinion and your right, I just defend my position without harsh words. Without criticism, how else can anyone get journalistic experience unless told that they are an "Idiot and Suck as a Reporter".
at 10:24 on February 15th, 2009
Too bad you research was wrong and your conclusions also wrong about Edward James Schellenberg, age 55, who resided in Abbotsford since 1991.
Did you aplogize to your off air critic yet ? And perhaps to Ed's widow Lois for your misguided innuendos ??
