NP Rank:
Political Correctness Perceived as Democracy by BC. New Democratic Party (NDP)
Altered states of political correctness are now
guiding the bastions of democracy in British Columbia.
An affirmative-action policy is to be introduced
in five ridings at the next election according to the New Democratic Party's
decision to "reserve nominations for women and minorities"
I recall that this measure or patronizing women and
minorities was addressed in the 1970's and was roundly defeated as being not
only undemocratic but demeaning to all party members.
The difference between then and now is that common
sense is nowhere designated as a requirement of any candidate when we read that
sitting opposition politicians (the NDP) evidently endorsed this
foolishness.
The energy spent by the Party Executive in pushing
for this proposed policy to be accepted by the convention delegates might be
seen, at the next election, to be the equivalent of shooting themselves in the
foot.
Thirty-years ago, voters perceived the attempt at
politic correctness at the riding level to be a creation of the strong trade
union influence on the party, and many votes, and members, cast their vote
elsewhere
I wouldn't be surprised to hear this argument
resurface.
Whether it does or not one thing is certain, NDP
voters will only take so-much "tinkering" with the democratic system, if they
feel as though they are being 'conned' they will put their mark elsewhere on
voting day.
Evan long time party loyalist "Corky Evans, MLA for
Nelson-Creston, conceded he had had some reservations about the idea, but that
his riding executive backed it". He said: "I just know we have been creeping up
towards this day for the 30 years I have been involved".
Come to think of it, I would qualify as a candidate
in an affirmative-action constituency:
- I have a disability, Parkinson's qualifies I
think, - I'm a pensioner...Tut! sorry, senior!
- I'm a Buddhist;
Three isn't a bad count but if I'm not a gay union
member I don't stand a chance to get on the candidates list ... but then, who
said life was fair!?
