Sonics Break Losing Streak
The Sonics finally win one, reports the Buzzer Beater. Last night against the Defending NBA Champion Spurs, the Sonics broke their losing streak. Our blogger gives credit in particular to Luke Ridnour, “who made some great passes down the stretch, including a crowd-pleasing no-looker to Durant for a dunk.” Wally Szczerbiak and Kurt Thomas also played well. “Thomas blocked two shots and also scored on consecutive finger-roll-resulting drives” and the “typically concrete-shoed Wally Zdrove baseline on Manu Ginobili and dunked on Tim Duncan.” Amazingly, the Sonics “turned the ball over only six times.”
Our blogger points out in the post that the day before, “Wally went to the press to complain about Durant's shot selection.” Then last night “Durant puts up 19 shots in 36 minutes, including the go-ahead jumper, which he made with roughly 30 seconds left in the game.” They embraced as they celebrated their victory, which Durant said “felt like a championship.”
Presidential Candidate Ron Paul to Visit Seattle this Week
Joel Connelly of Strange Bedfellows, a blog about politics and the economy, reports that “Libertarian-minded Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul will visit Seattle” this Thursday with three events. The Texas congressman will “deliver a noon hour speech on his Economic Plan to ‘local business and financial leaders’ at Lake Union Crew. Afterwards, he “will open the Washington State Ron Paul Headquarters” on University Way.
His final event will be “Soup With Students” at the University of Washington's Husky Union Building. He will then fly out “for a late afternoon event in Spokane” before heading for Grand Junction, Colorado. According to the post, other than Sen. John McCain, “Republican presidential candidates have steered clear of Democratic-leaning Seattle in recent years.” However, Paul “has been the lone GOP candidate to oppose the war in Iraq, and to argue for a scaleback of U.S. military commitments overseas.” In addition, he is a vocal critic of the U.S.A. Patriot Act.
Boeing Finances Strong Despite Dreamliner Delays
According to John Gille’s Biz Buzz, the production issues at Boeing will not have much financial effects on Boeing Co. finances. Their chief executive recently announced “robust earnings and higher projections for next year.” Record earnings for 2007 were $4.1 billion up from $2.2 billion in 2006. “Our 2007 results demonstrate the kind of quality financial performance we can achieve through our simultaneous focus on growth and productivity,” said Chairman Jim McNerney. He added that despite some “development program challenges,” they are essentially a “strong company growing stronger.”
In his post, Gille points to other “financial indicators” of Boeing’s strong performance last year, such as their new record of 1,413 commercial airplane orders, their 31% total growth in backlog of orders, and their 28% jump in cash flow. “Boeing Chief Financial Officer James Bell said much of the earnings performance came from high efficiencies in both the commercial airplane division and Boeing's defense business.” The continued delays getting the first 787 flying “has preoccupied the stock market.” But any negative effects from the late deliveries are “diluted,” said Bell, “because those effects will be spread over the huge volume of orders Boeing has won for the plane, 857 to date.”
