Memorial Stadium is Actually a Memorial
Over at Metroblogging Seattle, Samantha Mastridge informs us that there is actually a memorial at Seattle Center’s Memorial Stadium. Many people, including Mastridge, didn’t even realize this “until it became a point of contention in the plans to revamp the Seattle Center.” A wall of the stadium “has the names of all the Seattle high school students who died in WWII.” In all versions of the plans to “tear down Memorial Stadium and put in an amphitheater and parking lot” there is mention of saving the memorial wall.
King5 news reports that “veterans and Seattle activists argue saving the wall isn't enough. People want the stadium preserved because it's more than a place for football or concerts - it's a war memorial.” Mastridge points out in her post that the “wall” is referred to as “that dark one all covered in hedges.” So perhaps if the wall is “in the plans,” meaning someone may actually look after it and maybe “put in some lights and trim the hedges, then that's a better tribute than anyone on that wall is getting right now.”
Ray Rhodes Leaving the Seahawks
Danny O’Neil of the Seahawk’s Blog reports in a recent post that special assistant on Seahawk’s defense Ray Rhodes will be leaving Seattle for Houston, and the Texans “are expected to hire [him] as their new assistant defensive backs coach as early as today.” Rhodes was hired as the Seahawks defensive coordinator in 2003, then “suffered a mild stroke” before they began the 2005 season. “John Marshall became the acting defensive coordinator because Rhodes had to taper off his schedule,” but Rhodes stayed on to assist.
Rhodes and Seahawks’ coach Mike Holmgren worked together on the 49ers staff, then “Rhodes became the Packers head coach after Holmgren left to take the Seahawks job.” Holmgren hired Rhodes in 2003. According to the post, Rhodes attended high school and college in Texas and has always wanted to get back there. Texans’ coach Gary Kubiak said then Rhodes retires, “he wants to move to Dallas. This would be the first time he's coached in his home state.”
9,000 People to Ride from Seattle to Portland in July’s Classic Bike Ride
Jeremy Barker, blogging for Seattlest, announces the Seattle to Portland Classic. A “grueling-sounding” 204-mile bike ride between Seattle and Portland. This year, the ride takes place Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. “The hard-core riders apparently do it in one day; most do it in two.” Around 9,000 people take part in the ride every year.
General registration opens up next week on Feb. 1, although “for members of the principal organizer, the Cascade Bicycle Club, registration has been open since Jan. 1.” The cost join the club is $25 per year and “you can register for the STP at the same time.” The club offers free training rides if you’re nervous about participating, although the STP “is a fully supported ride” with medical personnel. About 2/3 of the participants “spend the night in or around Centralia, the center point.” According to the post, the slots do fill up, so act now if you’re interested in participating.
Have Huskies Found their new Defensive Coordinator?
Bob Condotta reports on the Huskey Football Blog that the Huskies “may have found a new defensive coordinator.” Two sources say that the position has been offered to Ed Donatell, “who most recently was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons under Jim Mora. He did not have a coaching job last season.” One of the two sources said it’s likely he’ll take the job.
Condotta reminds us in his post that the Huskies “have been searching for a coordinator to replace Kent Baer, who was fired last month after UW’s disappointing 4-9 season was punctuated by some defensive collapses.” In 1981 and 1982, Donatell “served as a graduate assistant” under Don James. In 1986-88 he “served on the staff at Idaho under Keith Gilbertson.” He has also worked in the NFL “as a defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator with the Jets, Chiefs, Broncos, Packers and Falcons.”

When visiting Seattle, I had no idea this was part of the Seattle Center. Once I found out what it was, I thought it was a unique and dynamic component to the Seattle Center's - and, by extension, Seattle's - history. It looks like a great facility and I think it would be unfortunate for it to become a parking lot. Hopefully, it can be financially sustainable to keep it around.
