Eyman’s Efforts Frustrate Gregoire

David Postman, Postman on Politics, updates us on the special session called by the state legislature. Last night, Gov. Christine Gregoire signed the 1 percent property tax cap and also “signed the second bill passed by the Legislature, the property tax deferral program for middle-income families.” Gregoire states the second bill was “part of what she needed to do to secure enough votes to reinstate I-747.”

In his post, our blogger interviews Gregoire regarding Tim Eyman’s participation in the process. Gregoire reaffirms that the session had nothing to do with Eyeman, it was due to the voters. She is also “not happy with Eyman's claims that she and the Legislature had not done enough.” She invites him to run for office if he wants “to participate in the legislative process.” She believes Eyman needs help writing his initiatives. “We're spending how much money and how much time in court proceedings because the initiatives are not written as they should be?” Gregoire asks.  That's what the legislative process is all about — to allow full and complete vetting and amendments and opportunities to do the sorts of things that can clean up a bill and give it a much greater chance of success through the court process.

Santana Price Tag Too High for Mariners

Blogger Dave over at U.S.S. Mariner says he’s been ignoring the Johan Santana situation long enough and it’s time for him to speak up. “It isn’t often that the best pitcher in baseball becomes available for trade,” and the Mariners should absolutely be interested in him. “It’d be irresponsible for the Mariners to not be at least somewhat involved in conversations about Johan Santana.” But should the M’s be competing with Boston, New York, and others in a bidding war?

Dave concedes in his post that Johan is a truly great pitcher, “worthy of a ridiculous amount of money and the acclaim being thrown his way.” But the exuberance around getting him is unrealistic. He is not “a panacea for all the ills that the Mariners are suffering from.” The M’s are not “one pitcher away from greatness,” and are not in the same position as New York and Boston, who legitimately could claim Santana as their “missing piece.” The cost to the Mariners, is simply too high and doesn’t make sense for them right now.

Rezoning Sparks Anger in Local Residents

A recent post in the West Seattle Blog reports that the heat is rising on the California Ave upzoning proposal, and that the town meeting last night to talk about the issue was SRO. The landowners behind the proposal, real-estate/property-management partners Roger Cayce and Mike Gain, were there to participate in the discussion. There was “lots of angry opposition” from the crowd “explaining why they want the zoning changed.”

The blogger states that the atmosphere was charged with fear and distrust, “fear that the character of the neighborhoods behind both sides of this California Ave block will be destroyed by big development, distrust of the applicants’ motives.”

In the post, the writer points out that they developers were “absent a specific project plan to review.” Right now, all they have is a basic proposal to rezone California between Hanford and Hinds. President of the Admiral Neighborhood Association, Mark Wainwright, inferred that the mistrust may have been lessened “if Cayce and Gain had approached the group before applying for the rezoning.” The first the public got word of the rezoning proposal was when the city published about it on its website and in the semiweekly.

PDC Recommends Rossi Complaints Dropped

The latest post on Chris Mulick’s Olympia Dispatch reports, that Agency staff at the state Public Disclosure Commission recommended “the commission dismiss the complaint filed by state Democrats against Republican gubernatorial candidate Dino Rossi.” The Democrats had alleged that the candidate used his non-profit organization, Forward Washington Foundation, as a front for his campaign for governor.

In the post, Mulick states that when the matter was reviewed, the PDC concluded that “Forward Washington is not a political committee and… Rossi was not a candidate for governor prior to accepting his first campaign contribution Oct. 12.” The PDC did not find any conclusive documents that supported that the candidate knew he was going to run for governor at the time. The PDC has recommended all charges be dropped. "This was obviously a desperate attempt by Christine Gregoire's agents to smear me, and it didn't work," states Rossi.
