Seattle IAM: Seattle Sonics Can’t Compete with Boston Celtics, Are Democrats Taking Over in Spokane?
This is a selection of recent popular blog articles from SeattleIAM where you will find the best blogs from Seattle, Washington as well as video uploads, social networking, rumors, and blog authoring
Sonics’ Good Effort Isn’t Enough Against Celtics
Gary Washburn at the Seattle Sonics Blog reviews Seattle’s loss to Boston last night (104-96) in his latest post. “The Sonics played well for most of the night,” he writes, but elite teams like Boston “turn up the intensity in the fourth quarter” and the Sonics just can’t keep up. The Celtic’s Paul Pierce showed why “he remains of the league's most feared scorers.” Kevin Durant “tried to match Pierce” and scored 17 points in the second half. He showed everyone that “he is only going to get better.”
The Sonics were shooting at 45 percent after the break “but they couldn't come up with key buckets down the stretch while the Celtics would respond with a 3-pointer.” Even so, Washburn says in his post that he can tell the Celtics respect the Sonics. They were excited about the game, in particular due to Ray Allen’s return to Seattle. “Allen didn't fare so well, but on this team, he didn't need to.”
Democrats Step it up in Spokane
According to Chris Mulick’s Olympia Dispatch Spokane hadn’t elected a single Democrat since 1938, when last year it suddenly elected two: Sen. Chris Marr and Rep. Don Barlow. And now Spokane Democrat John Driscoll is going to run against Republican Rep. John Ahern “in an effort to completely flip the political affiliation of the 6th District delegation in two short years.”
Mulick points out in his post that Driscoll is “not an unknown in Spokane.” He has been a contributor to Democratic candidates and is director of Project Access Spokane, which “provides health care to low income and uninsured people in Spokane County.” Driscoll is also “active with the Spokane County Regional Chamber of Commerce and last year was appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to the board of trustees for the State School for the Blind.” Rep. Ahern has received a little more than “60 percent of the vote against Democratic challengers in 2004 and 2006.”
Walker Top Choice for Huskies’ Defensive Coordinator Position
Over at the Washington Huskies Insider, Don Ruiz’s recent post reveals the latest rumours around the Huskies’ defensive coordinator position. According to Ruiz, “all indications point to UCLA assistant DeWayne Walker as Tyrone Willingham's top choice.” That is, if Walker isn’t stolen away by another offer first.
“According to several reports,” Ruiz states in his post, “Walker met with UCLA officials Wednesday morning about the Bruins' head job.” There are reports that Willingham may have “sweetened the pot” by offering a two-year contract, but there's no way to compete if UCLA offers Walker the post. Former UW head coach Rick Neuheisel has also been interviewed.
Beer and Science Together at Last!
In a recent post on Voracious, Maggie Dutton announces the twice-monthly gathering of Science on Tap, which “brings people together to talk about current topics and issues in the scientific community…it's beer...with science!” Science on Tap meets the first Tuesday of the month at T.S. McHugh's on Lower Queen Anne and the last Monday of the month at Third Place Pub in Ravenna.
In her post, she includes details about how to get more information and check out upcoming topics. The January 28th gathering will host Bill McNeely talking about alternative fuels. Also, NPR station KUOW is broadcasting a discussion about Science on Tap at 2pm.
