Republicans Critical of Satterberg's bipartisanship

According to Postman on Politics, a political blog written by Dan Postman for the Seattle Times, Republican incumbent prosecutor Dan Satterberg is drawing the ire of many of the more conservative Republicans within King County. Key Republican blogger Stefan Sharkansky has been especially critical of Satterberg's increasing attempts at bipartisanship.

The post quotes Sharkansky pointing to Satterberg's refusal to accept a $770 donation from Lori Sotelo as an especially awkward attempt at seeing bi-partisan. Sharkansky declared, “By returning the contribution instead of simply explaining the correctness of the decision not to prosecute Sotelo, Satterberg only raises doubts about his own impartiality and legitimizes the false partisan insinuation that Sotelo really should have been prosecuted.”

Postman on Politics was confident that Satterberg's refusal to continuously tow the Republican line wasn't doing him any harm, especially as a way to off-set his opponents attempts to scare voters by painting him as scary Republican. In fact, the post noted that the incumbent prosecutor could use Sharkansky's criticism as political capital, “I wouldn't be shocked to see Satterberg reprint the Sharkansky posts as a direct mail piece to Democratic households. I could imagine a headline that says, "How come the Republicans' favorite blogger doesn't like Dan Satterberg?”

Has Chris Gregoire Done Enough for the Independents?

The upcoming gubernatorial face-off between Republican Dino Rossi and incumbent Chris Gregoire is starting to heat up. According to the Eye on Olympia blog, following the aftermath of the 2004 election, former attorney general Gregoire faced stiff criticism from state Republicans who, at one point, were seen sporting signs on their cars reading “Revolt! Revolt!” The post noted, “the bitterness and resentment from early 2005 -- when Rossi lost by 133 votes after two recounts and a lawsuit -- is likely remembered in detail only by party stalwarts on each side.” Democrats are reportedly claiming that Gregoire has a solid track record of accomplishment from the past three years, Republicans are declaring just the opposite.

Eye on Olympia quoted Western Washington political science professor Todd Donovan commenting that despite a rocky start to her tenure as governor, Chris Gregoire has probably done enough to make independent voters forget about past controveries. Donovan stated, “the winds kind of went out of the sails of that 'she's not my governor' stuff,” and referring to independent voters, he declared, “they're not thinking back four years, and that's who makes or breaks an election.” The post even quoted Donovan comparing Gregoire's electoral controversy with President George Bush. “How much did the Florida thing hurt George Bush four years later? It didn't. People forgot about it, and when he ran for re-election, he did even better.”

Kevin Durant Will Miss Remainder of Pre-season

The latest post from the Seattle Sonics blog, written by Gary Washburn for the SeattlePI, is reassuring fans that Kevin Durant is indeed okay after sustaining an injury in the pre-season match against Golden State. While he will definitely miss the last two pre-season games, the post asserts that “he promised to return for the season opener Oct. 31 against the Denver Nuggets.” The injury happened when Warriors rookie Marco Bellini stepped on Durant's ankle, resulting in an “excruciating” sprain. The post quoted Durant saying “I just want to get treatment and get better every day. It was excruciating pain, it was hurting a lot. But once I was able to get up on it, the pain decreased a little bit.”

Despite the injury to one of their best players, and losing the game in overtime, the Sonics still managed to put together a solid performance. Washburn summarized the over-time loss by declaring that “the Sonics played considerably better than the previous two preseason games but found it difficult to run their half-court offense in overtime.” The Sonics managed to out-rebound the Warriors by a 58-54 ratio, but were undone by turn-overs. In a post game interview, Sonics head coach P.J. Carlesimo declared, “A lot of good things happened... From where we were I am encouaged. This was a bunch of steps forward.” Seattle Sonics blog commented that Nick Collision is likely to be starting center having combined with Chris Wilcox for a total of 21 rebounds between them.

Only One Coach to Return for Mariners

Caffeinated Confines, the Seattle Mariners blog from the MVN network, has revealed that only hitting coach Jeff Pendleton will return for next year, following a clear out of the Mariners coaching staff. The post noted, however, that many of these changes were expected for some time and are coming as little surprise to anybody who follows the team closely. However, the author did note that, “it looks like McLaren is hiring all of his old buddies instead of the best men for the jobs. I like some of these moves, but Stottlemeyer for pitching coach is not what this team needs right now.” The post pointed to Stottlemeyer's inability to coach younger players as a key drawback to his appointment as pitching coach.

The Mariners head coach is confident that the team will challenge for a playoff spot next year.

Caffeinated Confines was insistent that changes are needed for the Mariners to be able to seriously compete in the AL West. “This team will be a 81 win team unless the front office makes some blockbusters this off-season. But the only way for that to happen is through trades and not the free agents.” While acknowledging that signing a Japanese pitcher remains to be an option, he noted that “they really are hit or miss and the Mariners’ scoffed at the posting bids last off season so I doubt it if they will this season.” Seemingly, the coaching needs to acknowledge the need for at least one or two big name signings during the off-season, “the Mariners desperately need to start over instead of trying to plug managers and players in here and there.”
