Seahawks vs. Packers Packs More than Average Drama
The latest post from Seth on Seattlest previews Saturday’s NFC divisional playoff game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers, which promises to have quite a punch. Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren is a local hero in Green Bay. He coached for the Packers until 1998 when he left for Seattle. “He got the Packers to two Super Bowls” winning their first championship since Vince Lombardi departed. There's even “a street named after Holmgren near the Packers' stadium.”
Another twist Seth points out in his post is that “Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was once a backup to Packers quarterback Brett Favre.” They have different styles, Favre more of a “gunslinging gambler who's thrown more TD passes than any quarterback in NFL history--but also, more interceptions” and Hasselbeck a “methodical, risk-averse type.” The Seahawks played Green Bay in the playoffs in 2003 to a tie in regulation. The Seahawks lost in overtime “when Hasselbeck threw an interception that the Packers' Al Harris returned for a touchdown.”
Gregoire Won’t Support Assisted Suicide Initiative
A recent post from Lee on horsesass.org, the “straight poop on WA politics and the press,” reports that former Governor Booth Gardner has filed a “Death and Dignity initiative in order to bring Oregon’s assisted suicide law to Washington. Oregon’s law has been in place for 10 years and “only a tiny fraction of Oregonians take advantage of this law each year to legally end their lives on their own terms.” Booth Gardner suffers from Parkinsons. Governor Christine Gregoire, a friend of Gardner’s, told the press that she does not support his initiative. She states, “I find it on a personal level, very, very difficult to support assisted suicide.”
Lee calls attention to the fact that Gov. Gregoire is “strongly committed to a woman’s right to choose” an abortion and “does not see her role as governor as requiring her to impose her faith on the entire state.” Our blogger doesn’t understand how Gregoire “can see abortion as a fundamental right, but also see the right for a terminally ill individual to control their own death as being subject to other people’s moral qualms.” In the post, Lee condones Gregoire’s “hollow” campaign for governor as well as her tendency to revert to “the most authoritarian solutions… In almost everything we’ve seen, she seems more interested in doing the symbolic than the sensible.”
Gates Presents Spoof Video on his Retirement from Microsoft
Today on The Biz Buzz, Marce Edwards announces that Microsoft founder Bill Gates is “leaving the company's day-to-day operations” this year and he “spoke for the last time at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this week.” This will be the first time since he was 17 years old that he wouldn’t be working full-time at Microsoft. Poking fun at how he will now occupy his time, he presented a short video produced by the Kirkland company Tri-Film.
Edwards says there are “some laugh-out-loud moments” on the video about his “quest to find a new hobby.” In the film, Gates seeks jobs with Bono, George Clooney, Jon Stewart, Hillary Clinton and others. Tri-film says of the film, “Bill’s Last Day is Gates’ riotous spoof illustrating how he might spend his last full day at Microsoft, and his relentless pursuit of a new day job.” The post notes that interested readers can view the video on YouTube.
Henry Art Gallery Has New Director
A new post from Hank’s Blog, the Henry Art Gallery’s blog, announces the hiring of Sylvia Wolf as its new Director. Wolf succeeds Richard Andrews, “whose 20-year tenure ends April 2008.” Wolf was the “endowed chair and head of department of photography” for the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1999 to 2004, and has been adjunct curator since 2004. At the Whitney, she “presented solo shows of work by Roni Horn, Vik Muniz, Irving Penn, and Lorna Simpson, among others.”
The post notes that Wold has authored over “twelve books on contemporary art and photography, including Visions from America: Photographs from the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1940-2001; Michal Rovner: The Space Between; Ed Ruscha and Photography; The Kids Are Alright: Photographs by Ryan McGinley, and Polaroids: Mapplethorpe. Before Wolf was hired at Whitey, she worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, “where she produced over 25 contemporary art and photography exhibitions during her twelve-year tenure.” She will be the eighth person in the Henry’s 80-year history to be named director.
