Raptors Need Bosh to Keep up His Pace
The latest on RaptorsTalk.com gives us a pre-game post on the Raptors (14-11) game tonight against the Clippers (9-14). After a “tough loss” to the Boston Celtics, the Toronto Raptors took off for L.A. “This will be the first game of seven on the road for the Raptors who’ll play again on Wednesday against the upstart Portland Trailblazers.” Toronto played horribly against Boston, shooting “a dismal 39% [with] season lows in points (77), field goals (28), field goal attempts (78) and assists (16).” The only positive was Chris Bosh, who had “his eleventh double-double of the season.”
In the post, our blogger reports that “the Clippers have struggled so far this season without their franchise player Elton Brand,” whose ruptured Achilles may keep him out for the entire season. For Toronto, “Chris Bosh has been on fire since returning from injury” with four double-doubles in the last five games. However, since returning from his injury, “Andrea Bargnani has only scored 10 points” and TJ Ford is “expected to miss his fourth straight game with a neck/back injury.” The Raptors are on the road for seven games, all of them against Western Conference teams. “The Raptors swept the season series against the Clippers last year.”
Dodgeball is All Grown Up
Blogging for the Torontoist, Stephen Johns gives us the scoop on Toronto’s “dodgeball” phenomenon. After the release of Ben Stiller’s movie Dodgeball in 2004, “someone at the Toronto Central Sport & Social Club had a brilliant idea” and decided to start up their first-ever dodgeball league. “The goal was to get six teams; they ended up with twenty-four. Three years later they've got 110; that works out to about 1,100 participants,” which is quite an impressive number “for a sport which the TCSSC originally envisioned as a kind of joke.”
Johns, a member of the original league, writes in his post that adult dodgeball is a “full-blooded sport,” and not the game of childhood memories. There have been strained muscles, broken fingers, and high emotions. “We even witnessed an actual fistfight between competitors.” In the end, he states, the “original spirit remains.” It might be played quicker and the balls might travel a lot faster, but “it's refreshingly similar to the game we played back in the day.” For the curious, a new season is just about to begin.” You'll be hard-pressed to find more fun indoors this winter.”
Menu For Hope Raises Money for World Food Programme
Sheryl Kirby on Taste T.O. reminds us that there is still time to bid over at “Menu for Hope,” which is an annual fundraiser created by Pim of food blog Chez Pim. “All monies donated through the Menu For Hope raffle go to the UN World Food Programme, specifically to school lunch programs in the country of Lesotho.” Kirby herself has donated a package to the event and has added another item, “a $25 gift certificate to The Big Ragu.
Kirby is one of many food bloggers from around the world who have donated prizes, she states in her post. Anyone can buy a ticket online for $10US. After ordering tickets, bidders specify which prizes they want their tickets applied to.” Kirby’s prize is a “culinary tour of Toronto in the form of gift certificates to a variety of local shops and restaurants.” All the information and links are listed in her post.
Toronto Says Farewell to Popular Bike Shop
From Biking Toronto we get a sad farewell to another bicycle shop. Our blogger writes that “it seems weird that while more and more Torontonians are choosing their bikes for urban commuting, we've now had two stores close in a little over a month.” Last month saw the closing of Cavern Cycles and now Bicycle Specialties (in the Bermondsey and O'Connor area) is “closing their doors for good” this Saturday, Dec. 22nd.
According to the post, 69-year-old Mike Barry is “calling it quits” after 38 years of selling and fixing bikes. “I want to spend more time with my family,” says Barry. “My son is a professional cyclist and he lives in Spain with his wife and children. My wife and I would love to visit them more often, and do some riding of our own.” Barry states that he also has an impressive vintage bike collection and will now spend time restoring them.
