Tough Game Tonight for Raptors
A pre-game post over at Raptors Talk tells us our boys (10-9) are in for a tough fight when they take on the Boston Celtics (15-2) tonight. The Raptors lost to Boston (98-95) four weeks ago in overtime. We had some high scorers that game. “Ray Allen scored a game high 33 points and Kevin Garnett added 23 points and 13 rebounds.” Guard TJ Ford had 32 points and “Chris Bosh had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.”
Striking fear around the NBA are Boston’s “Big 3.” The trio Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett are “tearing up the league.” While the Celtics are “coming off a 113-103 win over the 76ers,” our Raptors are “coming off a tough, but entertaining, loss to the Phoenix Suns,” and were without Chris Bosh or Andrea Bargnani. “TJ Ford returned to the line up after missing five of the last seven and scored a team high 27 points.” In the post, our blogger writes that the Raptors have a “small chance” of a win, but without Bosh and Bargnani, the other players are going to have to step up.
Camera Ban Proposed by Fort Erie Mayor
Mississauga Musings, a political blog by Ursula Bennett, reports that last week the mayor of Fort Erie moved to “ban videotaping of Council meetings by private citizens.” The irony of this being that the Fort Erie council had invited Ontario Ombudsman, Andre Marin to the meeting. Bennett had earlier praised this move that gave their citizens the experience of “learning about transparency and accountability first-hand from Mr. Marin and not funnelled through some PR Spinners.”
A Fort Erie citizen alerted Bennett to this “no videotaping” motion, which happened right after Andre Marin spoke about transparency and openness. The details in the post state that after Marin spoke, there was a “break.” The Cogeco camera stopped rolling, and “after pretty much everyone had left, [mayor] brought forward a motion to not permit the taping of council meetings by the public.” A recent press release calls for anyone opposing this restriction to show up to Fort Erie council on Monday, Dec 10th with their cameras to protest this motion.
Organization Helps Oversized Swimmers Feel More Comfortable
Catherine McCormick of The Torontoist highlights the one-of-a-kind “Dunk Your Chunk” event this Saturday at Scadding Court Community Centre. Dunk Your Chunk is a “fat-positive” swim event produced by The Fat Femme Mafia, comprised of Chelsey Lichtman and Liz Brockest, who host fat-related events around town including “dance performances, workshops, and a fat cabaret that featured only performers of size.”
All Fat Femme Mafia’s events are to create a way for “people of size to come together as a community and share what could ordinarily be an uncomfortable or outright avoidable activity.” Lichtman says that donning a swimsuit can be intimidating for everyone, regardless of size, “but I think it can be especially hard if you're fat.” She goes on to explain in the post that our society doesn’t teach us “to love our bodies no matter what they look like...some fat folks haven't gone swimming in years in order to avoid the publicness of it all.” The Dunk starts at 11:30 a.m. and costs $5.
TTC Offers First Free NYE Rides Since 1970’s
From Blog T.O., Chris Orbz reminds us that the TTC will be offering “free after-midnight service for New Year's Eve as well as running subways until 4 a.m.” Although our blogger is appreciative of this serivce, they wonder why, during the rest of the year, “the TTC discontinues subway service before the last calls for alcohol are served in bars around town.” This seems reckless as it encourages drunk driving.
The post gives kudos for the TTC recognizing, at least, “that people will be out drinking on December 31st,” even if they haven't admitted that people are out drinking late all year round. Traditionally, the TTC offers extended hours on New Year’s, but the last time they offered free rides was in the late 70’s. This service was discontinues for lack of funds. Adam Giambrone expects “it to be a loss of around $80 000 and says the TTC is looking for sponsorship to offset that amount.”
