Record Breaking Year for Toronto Real Estate Market
As 2007 winds down to a close, the Toronto Real Estate Blog is reporting that the GTA's real estate market has surpassed its own record in terms of transactions for the year. “2007 is poised to set a record year overall, with transactions to top at least 90,000.” This figure eclipses the previous record of 84,000 transactions that was set in 2005. The post quotes Maureen O'Neil asserting that the increased amount of transactions is a consequence of the upcoming land-transfer tax. “Tuesday's rate cut is going to help as well.”
According to the post, the local real estate market has heated up significantly in recent years with O'Neil claiming that she hasn't seen anything like the current situation during her previous 27 years in the business. “You can now get 25-year, 30-year mortgages. You can go in for five per cent down, enabling people who never could afford to buy before.” The current scenario has led to the average price for a home towards 394,000 for the GTA, with Toronto itself weighing in at a hefty $410,000.
The Onion Picks on Toronto's Working Poor
A recent article from US-based comedy newspaper The Onion is being heavily criticized by the latest post from the Torontoist. The issue concerns 25 year-old Jason Jones, who made the front page of the Toronto Star last year as an example of the poor dental coverage available for the city's working poor. Thoughtlessly, the young man's “before” image, was used in an unrelated article about a fake Greyhound bus crash. According to the post, Jones face is “presented with three other individuals under the headline 30 Miserable Lives Lost in Greyhound Crash, the photo is followed by the caption, “Four degenerate sacks of sh*t who perished in the accident.”
The article described the people in the image (Jones included) as “deadbeat dads and penniless addicts.” Seemingly, no specific insult to Jones was intended as the author of the Onion article most likely found the image from a Google Image search. The post reveals that, “since Torontoist discovered this photo late Wednesday afternoon, Jones' image from the Onion story has been replaced with a photo of a grizzled older man.”
Pharmacy Robbed by Local Woman
The CHEV Local News Blog is reporting that a Markham woman has been arrested after an attempted armed robbery at a local pharmacy. “According to York Regional Police, the woman walked into Sunrise Pharmacy at 5970 16th Avenue, claiming she had a gun and demanded drugs.” As is the customary procedure, the employee handed over a bag of drugs with the woman subsequently fleeing on foot from the Sunrise Pharmacy, which is located at 5970 16th Avenue in Markham. Pharmacy robberies have grown in popularity recently with savvy thieves realizing they can steal cash and also grab prescription narcotics which are then sold on the street at rock bottom prices.
The post reveals that after being on the lam for only “a few hours” the local detachment of the RCMP arrested 40 year-old Tamara Rodin into custody. Rodin will face a host of charges with the CHEV Local News Blog observing that she is “charged with robbery while armed with an imitation firearm, disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions. She will appear in court on Jan. 9.”
Raptor's No Match for Steve Nash and the Suns
The Raptor's Den, a popular blog chronicling the exploits of Toronto's NBA franchise, has declared that without Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani the Raptors were no match for the Phoenix Suns. Led by Canadian sensation Steve Nash, “the explosive Suns” topped the dino's by a 136-123 margin- a very high scoring game. Raptor's Den referred to the game as “a track meet that they could not keep up with.” Both teams shot over 55% from the field.
The post noted that Steve Nash, specifically, was the driving force behind the might of the Phoenix Suns. “Nash’s homecoming was spectacular, as he led his team in an amazing offensive exhibition, scoring 10 points while dishing out 18(18!) assists.” The John Stockton-like focus on assists and jump shots has become a trademark of Nash's in recent seasons and while the Raps kept up the pace until the 3rd quarter, they were no match for Phoenix without two of their star players. The Raptor's Den also pointed attention to the outstanding overall statistics as an advertisement for the quality of NBA offence, “you have to just look a the glorious stats in this game: 18 assists for Nash, 259 combined points, Suns’ 45 point quarter, both teams shooting over 55% for the game- these are all just sick and should be pointed out.”
