Safety Ads Upset Viewers
In The Torontoist, Amanda Buckiewicz shares what some are calling “sensationalist” ads from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario. Their latest video campaign shocked our blogger when she saw them on YouTube, but she was even “more shocked when [she] saw them on prime-time television.” The ads are extremely graphic and include a young sous-chef slipping on grease and horribly scalding her face, a man who flies off a building onto a truck, a woman falling from a ladder onto a coffee table, and a man getting impaled by spikes. “All have the same random co-worker screaming “There's been an accident!” followed by the WSIB's slogan: There really are no accidents.”
The post quotes WSIB Chair Steve Mahoney who said, “We need to shock people into understanding the staggering number of workplace injuries and fatalities… This is not going to be a feel good campaign.” The ads were originally meant for night-time spots says the WSIB. Viewers complained recently when CBC broadcast the ads during a Saturday afternoon NHL game. Mississauga Transit refused to use print versions of the ads because “they found them too graphic.”
Raptors Win with Best Man Out
From the NBA Raptors News blog we get a post-game report on Toronto’s triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies last night (103-91). Even though Toronto lost their best player in the second quarter, they still came out ahead. Chris Bosh scored eight points in the first, but “stayed on the bench for the first minute of the second period before re-entering the game.” He then scored one more baskedt before limping away with a strained groin, which he later said had started feeling sore during Tuesday’s practice. Luckily, it didn’t make a difference for the win, “as Memphis was outscored by 20 points in the quarter.”
According to the post it was a “costly victory,” as Andrea Bargnani also limped off “after suffering a right-knee bruise in a fourth-quarter collision with Stromile Swift.” T.J. Ford missed his fourth straight game due to injury, but is said to be returning tomorrow. Meanwhile, “Jose Calderon posted his second straight double-double in relief of [Ford]” and has had 37 assists and only two turnovers in the past three games. "We've had our share of injuries early and we can just hope that's it's nothing too serious,'' coach Sam Mitchell said.
Vegetarians Plan for Future
In Taste TO, Sheryl Kirby reveals the Toronto Vegetarian Association’s long term plans through the year 2010. TVA has been around for 60 years working on behalf of Toronto vegetarians. When first established, they simply organized dinners, “but over the years the association has published two cookbooks, created an annual directory, set up a publicly-accessible resource centre, and annually hosts the largest vegetarian food fair in North America.” They have recently completed their “strategic plan up to the year 2010” with different concentrations each year.
The areas covered will include environment, health, and compassion for animals. The post announces that TVA recently released their strategic plan at their AGM, which includes how they will increase membership, inspire others to try vegetarianism, “question current farming and eating practices, increase awareness of health and nutrition issues related to eating meat,” and get people to consider where their food truly comes from. Also at their AGM, they recognized the work of their volunteers, especially on the “Veggie Challenge, youth programmes and at the annual Food Fair.” According Executive Director Kathleen Farley and Development Coordinator David Alexander memberships are up and the message is spreading.
Guilty Jim Jones Requested to Resign
In a recent post from the CHEV Local News blog, it was reported that the Town Council has asked deputy mayor Jim Jones to resign. “Councillors made the move at a meeting last night after Jones plead guilty to assaulting a maid at a Niagara-on-the Lake resort earlier this year.” The councilors moved to have him “removed as chairperson, deputy, director, or vice-chairperson of all town committees” during a closed session last night.
Jones did not attend the meeting, and had previously offered to resign as deputy mayor “in a letter from Jones and his lawyer.” According to municipal rules, states the post,
“councillors can move to ask Jones to resign, [but] they can’t force him to do so.” Jones appeared in court last Thursday, “where he was sentenced to 12 months probation and 20 hours of community service.”
