Weak Win for Raptors against 76ers
Over at RaptorsTalk.com, our blogger writes that yes, the Raptors beat the 76ers last night, but it was too close for comfort. “It was a disappointing win really, the game shouldn’t have been so close. The Raptors should have won by 25.” Our blogger points out that the Raptors “gave up 17 offensive rebounds… which led to 9 more shots from the field for Philly.” Chris Bosh had one measly rebound and Bargnani had two. “In a game where you can’t grab a rebound for your life, why did Humphries only get 5 minutes?”
Another frustration was that it didn’t make any sense that Mitchell sat Calderon to start the 4th, states our blogger in the post. Calderon is “the stabilizing force on the offense, the guy who distributes the ball, who knocks down his open jumpers, and can penetrate…” so why was he sitting on the bench? The one thing our blogger agreed with Mitchell on, however, was the unnecessary “Samuel Dalembert love fest… it is not necessary to give the guy a pre-game rub down when he is on the visiting team,” especially when he’s not any better than anyone else.
Local Woman Kidnapped and Robbed
CHEV Local News reports that York Regional Police “are looking for two suspects after a Markham woman was kidnapped and robbed” on Tuesday in the Kennedy Road and and Major Mackenzie Drive area. The woman had pulled into her garage and as she was getting out of her vehicle, she “was approached by two men who forced her into the back seat.” The suspects robbed her and “drove to the Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road area in Richmond Hill, before fleeing on foot.” The victim called the police and then was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The post reports that “both suspects are black males, 18 to 20 years old.” One is about “five-feet, eight-inches tall, 170 pound with a medium build, short black hair and clean shaven.” This suspect was wearing a “black sweater with a hood, blue jeans, a black baseball cap with a square brim, black wool gloves and a black bandana over his face.” The second suspect is about “five-feet, 10-inches tall, 185 pounds with a heavy muscular build, short black hair and clean shave.” He was wearing a “black windbreaker jacket, dark sweater with a hood, blue jeans, a black baseball cap with a square brim and black wool gloves.” Anyone with any information should call the police or Crime Stoppers and leave a tip.
Leafs Shut Out by Anaheim Ducks
In a game that may even “give Captain Mats Sundin pause for second thoughts as to his devotion to the Blue and White,” writes KP in Hockey Nation, the Toronto Maple Leafs “let the Anaheim Ducks run the game” to a 5-0 shutout. Goaltender Toskala returned to the ice to find that “defensively his fellow Leafs haven't quite grasped the idea of controlling the play in their end of the rink.” Toskala faced 24 shots by Anaheim, and “five found the range.” For Anaheim, Jean-Sebastien Giguere took on 28 shots as he “frustrated the Leafs to his 27th career shut out.” The Leafs were unable to score during six power play opportunities. “Combined with their defensive shortcomings and a general sense of lethargy that seems to haunt the team” it was an easy night for the Ducks.
Our blogger reminds us in the post that all this “less than stellar play” comes at a time when rumours about Sundin, coach Maurice, and GM Ferguson permeate discussion at the club. “Many saw this western swing as a last gasp chance for the Leafs to turn things around.” Next up, the Leafs play the LA Kings, “a team in a similar meltdown as the Blue and White, similar records and a coach under the gun.”
Political Prisoner Jahanbegloo Returns to University of Toronto
Robin Rix, blogging for the Torontoist, reports that The University of Toronto is bringing academic, author, and former Iranian political prisoner Ramin Jahanbegloo back as a “professor of political science and a member of the scholar-at-risk program in Massey College.” A former lecturer at U of T, Jahanbegloo moved to Tehran to “lead the Department of Contemporary Studies at a private institution called the Cultural Research Bureau.” Two years ago he was “detained without charge” for four months at Evin Prison. This is the same prison where photojournalist Zahra Kazemi “was arrested for taking photographs, leading to her imprisonment, torture, rape, and death.”
Jahanbegloo was released “following an awareness campaign” by organizations such as Amnesty and PEN. He took up a position in India before returning to Toronto. He will e giving a public lecture on January 28th about his new book The Clash of Intolerances. Rix states in her post that it’s a “good gain for U of T, though a sad reminder… that freedom of speech is a precarious right in too much of the world.”
