Canucks Take Ducks 3-2
The latest from Waiting for Stanley has our blogger admitting to “underestimating” the Canuck’s abilities. Goaltender Curtis Sanford gets props for being Vancouver’s star last night. “The Ducks outshot the Nucks 35-20, including 16-1 in the 3rd period, but Sanford was outstanding.” Mason Raymond and Jason Jaffray were also good with a goal and an assist each.
Our blogger is “excited” for both players, but especially Jaffray, “who is 26-years old and is finally getting his chance in the NHL.” Quoted in the post, Jaffray said, “It was a great feeling to see the look on Mason's face when he got his first one out of the way… and when that puck went in for me, I could have jumped five, six feet in the air.” With Morrison gone for a while, Jaffray has to fill his shoes. Jaffray doesn’t know if it’s possible, but says perhaps he can “soften the blow… if I can provide offense and create scoring chances.”
Senior Housing Development in Langley Has Redefined Meaning of “Senior”
A recent post in Langley Free Press announces a “Fort Langley Xmas Surprise” for Langley residents. A well renowned developer, who is building homes in Bedford landing at the old Fort Langely Interfor lands mill site, is “seeking Township council's final approval to build a so-called Seniors apartment building by the river in Fort Langley.” This particular area has, for years, been envisioned as a place for Langley and Fort Langley seniors to retire. Suddenly, however, some unforeseen and unintended plans have sprouted up and it seems as though the new plans are trying to be pushed through before the holidays, and before residents have time to evaluate the new plans.
First, writes our blogger in the post, the current plans are for a 4 story building as opposed to the original 3 story plan. Second, the building will specifically be for those seniors “45 and older.” Our blogger guesses that 45-year-olds will “be surprised to find out the new definition of seniors.” In addition, the new plans are not consistent with a “Fort Langley style and structure.” A concerned group of local residents have called for the council to remain with the 3 story guidelines, considering it will be right by the river. They also recommend waiting until January to make a decision, convinced that these changes are not in keeping with the original form and character of the community.
A Cacophony for the Holidays
Metroblogging Vancouver invites you to celebrate “Unsilent Night” in Downtown Vancouver on Sunday, December 23rd. “Unsilent Night started in 1992 in New York, and has become incredibly popular, often attracting crowds numbering in the thousands.” During the event participants carry boomboxes playing separate tracks of music, each contributing a unique voice to the sound that is Unsilent Night.
Blogger Rebecca Bollwitt asks, “What could be more fun that being in a mob of people all cranking tunes walking across downtown Vancouver?” She instructs in her post that to participate, “you need to bring something that will play sound, and then get your paws on some tunes.” If you need something to play, you can show up at 6:45pm to “score a tape or CD.” It all starts at 7 pm at English Bay and treks up to Robson Square. Come “be a part of a moving block-long sound system.”
Vancouver’s Gross Misconduct Thrashes Out Debut Album
Steve Duncan, writing for Commercial Drive Live, announces an addition to the all-ages Amon Amarth / Sonic Syndicate show on Dec. 14th. Vancouver-based death/thrash band Gross Misconduct will be slotted first for Friday’s show, which will be held at the Croatian Cultural Centre starting at 6:30. The band has had “an extremely eventful last six months” including the release of its independent debut, "The Process of Indoctrination.”
Duncan states that since releasing their debut, they “briefly toured the Canadian West Coast with Galy Records artists Martyr and Neuraxis,” played shows with Innernal Majesty & Thine Eyes Bleed, as well as “playing the Vancouver stop of the Vans Warped Tour in July.” The post states that the album has “garnered an overwhelmingly positive” reviews and Gross Misconduct is “shopping its debut to labels and distributors.” Their material can be found on MySpace.
