Next Step for Eco-Density

Brent Toderian blogging at Planetizen, the planning and developing network, announces the “next step” in Vancouver’s eco-density initiative, which “began last week with the presenting of the draft ‘EcoDensity Charter’ and initial ideas for action to Council.” The charter will be discussed and referred to during a special council meeting at the end of February 2008. The next three months will be spent “listening to the public's thoughts on the drafts,” which Toderian recognizes will be varied.

In his post, Toderian relays the perspectives that have been communicated via the media, articles, and blogs. “The community is very aware and engaged in this important initiative, and that’s a great thing.” Some are worried density will diminish “quality of life,” of that it will come in the form of “high rise towers, and only market condos.” They want to make sure it is actually “eco” and not just “density” Many others “believe meaningful change is necessary” and want it to be done properly and for the right reasons, “with beautiful, green design and strong eco-performance technologies.”

Canucks Back Against the Blackhawks

The latest on Canucks Hockey Blog gives us a game-day post from our blogger. With “pretty much a no-show” for the Canucks on Sunday, it’s time to get it together for tonight’s game against the Blackhawks, who are “still pissed off.” The game a week and a half ago was the first of Roberto Luongo's three straight shutouts and they’re still upset by Matt Cooke's hit on James Wisniewski. “The puck was spinning,” Cooke told the Vancouver Sun, “I went to pick it up, it went in my feet and I looked down and I was close to the boards and I chipped it out and never saw him.”

Our blogger doesn’t remember Wisniewski being hit from behind, still, warns the post, Cooke better watch his back. Wisniewski told the Chicago Sun-Times “he won't be running around looking for revenge… “but I'm not going to pass up on a hit.'” The Blackhawks are “tied with the Canucks with identical 14-10-2 records and 30 points.” The Canucks have only lost once to them “since the lockout season.”

Results of Secret Meeting to be Announced

Bill Tieleman, whose office was ransacked over the weekend, reports that tomorrow the results will be announced from the “secret B.C. Supreme Court hearing that excluded both the media and public in the case of three provincial government aides charged with breach of trust, fraud and money laundering.” A temporary publication ban by Justice Elizabeth Bennet has restricted a lot of what can be said. She will be deciding if even “defence lawyers and defendants David Basi, Bob Virk and Aneal Basi will be allowed to hear [the] secret material” presented by the Crown.

In his post, Tieleman writes that “Michael Bolton, lawyer for David Basi, was concerned about possible exclusion of defendants and their legal counsel.” Bolton believes that not only is it highly unusual to exclude the accused from a portion of his trial, it is “almost an unconscionable concept.”

Vancouver has Hoop History

A recent post on Beyond Robson by blogger Karl disputes the idea that Vancouver does not have a rich basketball history, regardless of the Grizzlies failure in Vancouer. “I don't remember… who made that baseless claim, but he certainly didn't consider hoops at the grassroots level when he made that ignorant statement.” Basketball is “alive and well” in the Lower Mainland, when you consider the Agrodome during the Provincial AAA high school championship tournaments.

Our blogger states in his post that although the tournament is months away, “fans of high school hoops can whet their appetites at the HSBC Basketball Classic,” in its eighth year. The tournament features both Boys and Girls basketball, wheelchair, First Nations, and more. The Classic “officially rings in the 2007/08 high school basketball season” and started on Monday. It runs through December 8 “at various gyms throughout the Lower Mainland with the final at UBC.”
