Canucks must go “back to Vigneault basics”
After Wednesday nights 8-2 drubbing from the Flyers, the Canucks are back in action tonight. According to Waiting for Stanley, the Canucks will be dealing with a similar type of opposition tonight when they face off against the Edmonton Oilers. The post observed that “the Flyers made the Canucks look like slugs with their speedy game, and their ability to move the puck around so quickly… The Oilers have the same ability to make us look like pylons. They use a speedy aggressive style.”
Waiting for Stanley firmly believes that the best game plan for tonight will involve getting “back to Vigneault basics.” “Vigneault basics” means that we will see the Canucks “clog up the neutral zone and slow the opposing team down.” The post also declared that we can expect to see new line changes tonight thanks to the departure of Ryan Shannon and the subsequent call-up of Rick Rypien- a player that Waiting for Stanley thinks will bring “a little bit of added muscle and speed” to the line-up. The post predicted that the Canucks will likely take this game. Waiting for Stanley’s prediction? “I'll say the Canucks settle back down and win this one 3-2.”
Zero Avenue Speeder Group has Zero Intelligence
A recent post from Langley Politics Dotcom, a blog written by Langley Town Councillor Jordan Bateman, reveals some shocking details about excessive speeding on 0 Avenue in Abbotsford. Originally written in Bateman’s Web Slingin’ column in Abbotsford’s The Post, Bateman states that motorists have gotten so out of hand on 0 Avenue that speed demons have even started a Facebook group to brag about their exploits. According to Bateman, “the ‘0 and 16th Ave Speeders’ are a group of about a dozen people who ‘admit to speeding on those roads.’ Some of their comments should worry you.” The founder of the group, named Richard Allegretto, was convinced that speeding is perfectly fine, provided that a person speeds safely. Bateman quoted him saying “speeding is only dangerous if you drive like an idiot while doing it, if everyone is doing the same speed and not weaving in and out of traffic, things should go just fine!”
Bateman stated that “Langley Township raised several intersections along 0 (Avenue) to encourage drivers to slow down.” According to a member of the 0 and 16th Ave Speeders group, “I love taking 0 Ave. It's my favourite (sic) stretch of road ever. The 'raised intersections' make it even more fun! I don't endanger myself or others, but I do like to go fast on it. Ok, I like to SPEED on it!”
The article also noted a recurring trend among this group of suburban speeders- hefty fines. When one member recently received a $483 fine for speeding down 0 Avenue, they announced their disgust to the entire group. “I didn't know tickets could be that much... Anyway needless to say, I'm fighting it.” Another Abbotsford speeder reported that “I crashed my brand new car on 0 Ave. last year…drive it everyday at 5 in the morning going to Delta and I think I have gotten up to about 140 or so. What a great drive!”
More minority women needed in local politics
The latest post from the Oldtown News blog has several observations about last night’s COPE meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to address the issues confronting women in politics and also to “encourage more women to enter politics.” The panel included former Councillor Ellen Woodsworth, Sue Hammel- the MLA for Surrey-Green Timbers, park commissioner Loretta Woodcock and school board trustee Sharon Gregson. Jamie Lee Hamilton, the author of the post, was dismayed at the low turn-out for the event; noting that “COPE, has lots of work to do if it is to have any significance in next year's municipal election. I really felt sad that the turn-out was so small.”
The post was convinced that COPE should attempt to engage more minority women and encourage more ethnic diversity in their candidates. According to Oldtown News, “all the panellists were Caucasian women and this was once again, concerning. I would have loved to have heard from a female Aboriginal Chief or Band Councillor.” In order to truly understand the barriers that keep women from entering politics, Oldtown News stands firm in its belief that “we need to start including those minority voices who have even more political obstacles to overcome than Caucasian women.” The blogger also declared it “vitally important” that women compromise 50% of the Greater Vancouver Area’s elected representatives. Additionally, the post emphasized that “of these 50 percent I want to see at least half coming from a visible minority background.”
Norgate Upset over Sewage Treatment Plant
According to the latest post from the North Vancouver Politics blog, citizens from the Norgate area of North Vancouver have recently rejected the city’s plan to install a bus terminal in their neighbourhood. The post stated that residents were concerned about the level of “noise, traffic and yes, air pollution that would come along with it.” Unfortunately, it seems as though those residents may be getting an even rawer deal soon. North Vancouver Politics stated that, seeing as though the bus depot idea failed to materialize, the latest plans for the site would involve “a sewage treatment plant to be built in their neighbourhood on the old BC Rail site.” The BC Rail site is adjacent to the Norgate area.
Currently, the sewage treatment plant is located just inside West Vancouver, but the latest plans involve a 17 million dollar deal to purchase the deed “to a 2.8-hectare site in the passenger station land at West First and McKeen Avenue.” The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the neighbourhood of $200 million. Current plans would see the sewage treatment plant be fully operation within a 15 year time-frame.
