Betty Krawczyk will run for mayor

According to a recent post in The Tyee, “Vancouver's most famous raging granny” is officially planning to run for mayor following her recent release from jail. Betty Krawczyk was quoted as saying “I got out of prison and the city's in shambles! There's garbage everywhere! Anyone can do a better job than this.” Krawczyk was incarcerated at the Alouette Women’s Correctional Facility, her eighth prison stay, for failing to observe a court order instructing her to stay away from a construction zone near the Eagle Ridge Bluffs. She is currently involved in a Supreme Court case challenging the legal reasoning behind commercial injunctions, which according to Krawczyk, “strip people of their legal rights, their rights under the charter. It's the same kind of legalities that are used to toss poor people out of substandard housing.”

In fact, the post noted that Krawczyk considered Vancouver’s homeless problem to be akin to the scenario that played out on the Eagleridge Bluffs. She declared, “it's like the homeless people on the downtown eastside. We're destroying their habitat. Where are they going to live? They're like the spotted owl, an endangered species. It's all the same.”

Surplus surprises Translink, bad service surprises nobody

A recent post from Stephen Rees’ blog has warned of “a real issue of credibility” in regards to Translink’s 17 million dollar surplus forecast for 2007. Rees noted that “this is the organization that recently hiked fares. The same organization that cannot cope with current demand and has little in the way of current plans to deal with that.” The 17 million dollar surplus will be thrown into the 386 million dollar pile that Translink is currently sitting on. However, the post quotes Translink board chairman Malcolm Brodie saying that the surplus is needed to “address long-range plans, particularly because the annual surplus is expected to end after 2008 due to rising costs.”
Rees was incensed that Translink could offer such terrible service and overcrowding while sitting on a nearly $400 million surplus that is doing nothing more than sitting in a bank accumulating interest. The whole scenario left Rees declaring “I wonder if anyone at Translink thought that perhaps they might actually spend some of this ‘found money’ on improving service?”
Carole James: a consensus of one

The latest post from Walter Schultz’s blog reveals that he is adamant that NDP leader Carole James is leading by no other consensus than her own personal one. Schultz declared that “Carole James is fond of saying that the NDP caucus has a consensusposition and then issue by issue, one of her MLA's contradicts her. I wonder if she even knows what the definition of consensus is?” Schultz cites several specific instances when James said her party had reached a general consensus on something and then failed to act accordingly. For instance, in a speech on May 2nd she stated that “the New Democratic Party caucus wouldn't take the proposed 29 per cent pay increase proposed for MLAs.” The post goes on to quote NDP Yale-Lillooet MLA Harry Lalli stating “I am in support of this package that the independent panel has put forward. And so when I go into the legislature I will be supporting it.” In Schultz opinion, that doesn’t sound like much of a consensus.

Additionally, Carole James dropped the c-word again during a press conference on the Tsawwassen treaty. After the vote was ratified, James called a press conference “to announce that the NDP supports the Tsawwassen treaty and has for some time. She had initially delayed taking a stand on the treaty. Then after the Tsawwassen band voted yes, she announced a caucus ‘consensus’ in support of it.” James later suspended NDP MLA Michael Sather for saying he would vote against the Tsawwassen treaty. In fact, this left Walter Schultz lamenting that “it is becoming down right comical when ever Carole James uses the word consensus in her speeches.”

Canucks 8-2 loss was “just ugly”

The Canucks 8-2 defeat at the hand of the Philadelphia Flyers was not a good performance by any stretch of the imagination. According to the latest post from the Canucks Hockey Blog the whole thing was “ugly. Just ugly… The Canucks were awful. Poor defensive coverage, odd-man rushes, giveaways you name it, there was lots of it.” The post was adamant that Vancouver’s lack of possession was one of the chief reasons for their undoing.

The Canucks Hockey Blog was insistent that Jesse Boulerice’s cheapshot on Ryan Kesley deserves nothing less than a suspension, a thought shared by the Flyers coach, of all people. The post declared “his team was already up by five goals when he decided to break his stick on Ryan Kesler's face… Was he trying to finish his check like Steve Downie?” Although, it was noted that after Boulerice’s crosscheck, the Canucks at least started to play with a bit more fire, alas, it was too little too late. At the end of the game, the Canucks Hockey blog firmly believed that “as good as the Canucks were on Saturday, they were just as horrible last night. It's been a while since I've watched them sleepwalk through a game like that, playing with absolutely no emotion.”

Inveslogic, thanks for keeping us on the Vancouver up and up. Great stuff!

Thanks Kaitlin, there's so much happening in this city it can be hard to keep up. We appreciate the compliment!

Hmmm....so, some of us who are having our blogs aggregated without permission aren't too happy with "inveslogic" (got a real name? would be nice to talk to a human...). As you'll notice, the first link in each paragraph goes to the directory listing, not the source website.

Inveslogic, I think round ups like this are interesting and provide, but that linking to your directory entries is not that kosher -- you already get attribution at the end through your "about" section.

While I'm mentioning a few things, the redirect that you use on your site for each article doesn't, IMNSHO, provide proper attribution. Fixing that would go a long way towards making me think you are working towards everyone's common interests. Care to comment on what your thoughts are on aggregating all these blogs?

Inveslogic, again great work.

 A few comments.

I take great issue with this statement:

She declared, “it's like the homeless people on the downtown
eastside. We're destroying their habitat. Where are they going to live?
They're like the spotted owl, an endangered species. It's all the same.”

The implication is that the street is the natural and ideal environment for the homeless and seems to  ignore a solution to the fundamental issue.

An observation about the Canucks game. A horrible loss by any account. The Canucks looked disorganized, lazy, and frankly uninterested in playing with any passion. A comparison between the Flyers game to a divisional match up highlights the emphasis on speed and precision plays on the Flyers part (and the Eastern Conference in general) while the teams in the Northwest division focus much more on the dump and chase and physical play and stellar goltending (Luongo, Kipursoff, Turco etc.).

The Canucks fastest players (Burrows, Kessler, Shannon) are also the least experienced and just couldn't keep up. They got to make some changes and get organized for the important games against Edmonton this weekend.

Ryan -- this is not material from Inveslogic. He's re-posting from original blog posts...so you can't really take issue with any of it, you have to go comment at the original blog post. Which is, thankfully, linked.

Thanks for your comments Boris.  We'd like to point out that we go to great lengths to promote the blogs we aggregate.  Just by doing these daily articles we are drawing attention to the great blogs of Vancouver and in each article we provide a direct link back to the blog.  I should point out that we do provide a link back to VancouverIAM as well but that its to the individual blog's summary page which helps to further promote the blog itself.

I would also like to point out that any blog we are aggregating that is not happy with our practices should let us know and we would be happy to remove them from the IAM site.

Thanks,

George Fleming

Ryan,

One thing about the Canucks that no seems to want to talk about is how the defence is a half step slower than it needs to be and the number of stupid give aways they are guilty of each game.  Ryan Miller has been dreadful since he started playing and so have Bieksa and Ohlund.  They can't get the puck out of their own zone most of the time.

I was also just reading in Canucks and Beyond, one of the great Canucks blogs that we aggregate, that Ryan Shannon has been sent down to the Moose.   Thats a surprising move since he's provided two or maybe even three goals on the power play so far and brought that speed they need so badly.  I guess coach V is starting the shake up.

Boris - your concern is appreciated. However,  I was simply responding to a public comment made by a public personality and was not taking issue with the blogger nor the roundup. And surely you don't think that a discussion of a public matter must stay in the forum where it was first originally loaded.

The defense clearly can't keep up. Bieksa looks injured, Ohlund's head is still back home (he lost his mother over the summer) and Aaron Miller is useless.

Shannon has definitely been a presence. He's got the most heart out there and the biggest hustle (reminds me of Burrows last season). But note that both his goals came after a Sedin twin setup (the same play in fact which isn't going to work much longer as was evident in the PP's later in the game) that even you or I could have made. And Shannon was -4 last night, worst on the team. They will probably call up a new defense man in place of Shannon would be a wise move.

Ooops Aaron Miller not Ryan Miller.  I sure hope he's not THIS bad and its just an old guy who was hurt and taking a long time to get his stride going.  Otherwise he's looking like a modern version of Dana Murzyn.  I also frankly hope Bieksa is injured otherwise its the sophemore jinx and that big contract.

I bet they call up Rypien since Cooke is invisible, Isbister is being Isbister and whats with Ritchie?

It always seems to be that the Canucks don't get their sh*t togther until they are neck deep in it.

I don't know who the public personality is (Inveslogic -- since he has no name / person details)? How can you have a discussion with someone who reposts other people's work? You could say, "What do you (Inveslogic) think about X -- I think this". But the way you wrote it, you are commenting / responding as if Inveslogic wrote those words...which he did not.

Re-blogging is a difficult topic. Round ups are interesting/useful...I already stated my concerns about improper linkage and attribution. So far, Inveslogic / VancouverIAM have not done much to make those people whose material they source like them.

Boris,

I was commenting on the statement made by  Betty Krawczyk a public personality not the content of the specific blogger.

I think the fact that the blogs are linked to directly and that Inveslogic clearly attributes the sources is totally 'kosher'.

Hi George -- thanks for signing your name so I know who I'm talking to :P

VancouverIAM has a redirect on outgoing links, and also promotes a permalink to the story on the VancouverIAM site itself, rather than to the original. If those things could be addressed, I think it would go a long way.

I had sent some questions via email when the site was in beta and never got them answered. I'll resend them and re-iterate my concerns there. Cheers.

I love Canucks and Beyond (run by my friend Alanah) and I love that it's possible to include permalinks in comments so that people can go check out these wonderful sites directly :-)
