Proposed Office Building will be First to go Carbon Neutral

Vancouver City Councilor Peter Ladner has revealed in his blog that Vancouver is set to become the proud home of North America's only carbon neutral office building. Ladner declared this a direct result of “my motion, unanimously passed by council, that all new buildings in the city be carbon neutral by 2030.” While 2030 is a long way off, Ladner stated that architectural firm Busby Perkins + Will has outlined the details surrounding their new plans for a carbon neutral office tower adjacent to General Motors Place. Ladner also reminds us that “it's our first new all-office tower in more than a decade, providing much-needed downtown office space.”

The post also includes a recent article from the Journal of Commerce that catalogs many of the proposed buildings new features. According to the article, “the 22-story structure is being proposed not just next to, but attached to General Motors Place by a development group called Tri Power.” Additionally, it will be one of the first office buildings in a long time to feature opening windows. The building will not require a new parking structure, as it will share parking with GM Place. In fact, parking isn't the only way that these two structures will interact. “Rain water from the arena’s vast roof may well be used by the tower... Ice shavings from the arena will be used to help cool the office building. The cooling tower on the arena tosses a lot of hot air into the atmosphere. Consultants Stantec plan to capture that hot air and will use some of it in the office tower.” The architects are extremely confident that the construction of this building will actually lower the amount of fossil fuel consumed in GM Place and Vancouver, in general..

Canucks Take on NHL's 2nd Worst Defense

According to a recent post from Canucks Hockey Blog today's match-up between the Los Angeles Kings and the Vancouver Canucks has the potential to be a seriously high-scoring game. The Kings are “allowing a whopping 4.25 goals per game (2nd worst in the league)” while Vancouver is suffering from a similar lapse in defensive solidity. The post stated “the trademark defense that only let in 2.40 goals per game last season is currently allowing one more goal per game (3.50) and ranks 25th in the league.” Canucks Hockey Blog pointed out that since L.A has inherited our previous coach, “they have our previous goaltending problems.”

LA's main threat supposedly lies in the team's younger generation. The post declared, “don't give the kids - Cammalleri, Frolov, Kopitar and Brown - too many scoring opportunities.”Additionally, Vancouver will require a strong opening 20 minutes and they will need to ensure that they don't lose momentum in the later periods. The door definitely seems to be open for a Canucks victory thanks to L.A's lack of a solid shot-stopper between the sticks. Canucks Hockey Blog mentioned that “it's a refreshing change that the team coming into The Garage is the team with the goaltending problems.”

Lion's Owner Sees Team Abandon Training

During Thursday's BC Lion's practice session, a heavy downpour coincided with a visit by Canucks owner David Braley. The Fifth Quarter, a B.C Lions blog written by Lowell Ullrich from The Province,

was hopeful that this would serve as concrete proof that in order for the Lions to take advantage of practice time, they would need an indoor training facility sooner, as opposed to later. Ullrich declared that “it's been stated quietly for the past several years that the Lions need another practice facility. It's been stated even more frequently that one is on the way.” The Lions were forced to abandon their training session on Thursday an hour into their session and they are expected to make up for lost time during today's practice.

During Thursdays's training session, Ullrich spoke with Braley about “what keeps the owner active with his football business these days.” Interestingly enough, Braley outlined plans to offer Lions football online. Braley spoke of “his hope that the technology and infrastructure to broadcast every Lions home game on a broadband basis will be in his hands within five years.” Ullrich emphasized that “we said Braley's hands, not those of a network.” The Lions owner was also excited about the massive crowd expected for Saturday's showdown with the Edmonton Eskimos. The post declared that Saturday's game was “guaranteed to be the largest of the season.” Additionally, Braley confirmed that tomorrow's match-up would be blacked out, locally.

BC Real Estate Continues Upward Surge

The latest post from Chinese in Vancouver is revealing some new data from the British Columbia Real Estate Association. According to the data, both volume and unit sales have increased significantly between September 2006 and September 2007. Chinese in Vancouver states that “residential sales volume on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in BC climbed 20% to $3.42 billion in September, compared to the same month last year. Residential unit sales increased 6.8% to 7,687 units during the same period.” The average price for a home has risen 12.3% in the last year and now sits at $445, 205.

The post quotes BCREA chief economist Cameron Muir declaring that “Housing demand hasn’t let up after a record-breaking summer...Strong economic conditions are underpinning BC home sales.” Muir also pointed to “robust” job growth, low levels of unemployment and rising wage levels as the key factors behind BC's surging housing market. The post points out that “more than 70,000 jobs have been created in the province over the last year, while the unemployment rate hovers near an historic low.”
