I expect harsh emails because of this but let's face it, as a general rule of thumb, most Africans and other people of colour haul ass for the suburbs once they can afford it and never come back. Well, some of us do. At least I did, to a degree. Regular readers are fully aware of my past era of being the White Man's Black Indian Pinoy. I was the quintessential Uncle Tom making the very same deluded arguments that Oprah did as to why we, all, my poor, Brown peoples had not arrived. I admit it. I began as a proud and politically argumentative youngster but after the threats, spanking from my parents, beatings from fellow students and horror stories of what happens to young boys who ask to many questions, I bitched up and joined the maddening crowd. After seeing the light almost twenty years later, I feel qualified to critique Ms. Winfrey because I was Ms. Winfrey. And as I learned to work on de-colonialising my mind and spirit, I believe she can as well.
